As the campaign was in its closing days the idea of
developing/re-introducing a shadow cabinet came to mind. I shared the
idea with some others folks and we agreed that this needed to go to the
wider party.
Thanks to the work of many hands we have a good presence on the web for
both our state party and the (former) Barth/Johnson campaign. These
forums could continue to provide a place for us to get our message out
to the people of Iowa if we can find a way to articulate it clearly.
One possible way to do this is to have a shadow cabinet provide regular
updates on the legislative session and the policy statements from the
governor.
This has been tried before with mixed results. Such an endeavor would
take some hard work and would require a number of hands to pull it off.
It cannot be the operation of just one or two people, or even five or
six. That would be a recipe for burnout. I would guess that a minimum
of two, and preferably three people would be needed for each "office" on
the shadow cabinet.
The goal could be for each group to review matters relating to their
"office" and write a monthly editorial piece. Ideally we would stagger
these so that something was coming from one of the groups each week, or
every other week, to keep content fresh on our web outlets. These
pieces would be used as op-ed pieces in the print media, blog entries,
letters to our elected officials, webpages/PDF documents, or anything
else we thought might be a good way to distribute them.
Yes...it's a lot of work, and we are all tired of politics right now.
But the new legislature starts in just 7 short weeks, and there will be
much to talk about.
This is just an idea. A piece of clay. If enough folks want to do it,
we can make it happen in any way we want.
Are there enough people interested to take on the following offices:
Governor/Lt. Governor
Secretary of State
Secretary of Agriculture
Department of Education
Department of Economic Development
Government Reform/Ethics
Even if we can only do 2 or 3, is it still worth the effort?
