Join the Declaration of Peace
I'm writing today to ask for your support for the Declaration of Peace.
What is the Declaration of Peace?
Millions of Americans have withdrawn their support for the war in Iraq. A clear majority of the U.S. public believes that the Iraq war is a mistake. We need to keep calling on Congress to bring the troops home and to focus on reconstructing, not occupying Iraq.
The Declaration of Peace is a campaign focusing on Congress that gives you the tools to make change.
This locally driven, national campaign enjoys the support of more than 350 organizations across the country. It is a community building effort that embraces legislative outreach, displays of public opposition, and is punctuated by nonviolent direct action.
The call
The declaration calls for the establishment and implementation of a withdrawal plan of U.S. troops from Iraq by September 21-- International Peace Day. We're asking that the troop withdrawal be completed no later than March 19, 2007, the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.
If the plan is not enacted by this date, a week of coordinated actions will take place from September 21-28. A variety of nonviolent actions, including civil disobedience, will take place in Washington, D.C. and across the U.S.
How can you get involved
Sign the Declaration of Peace online.
Schedule or join a meeting with your elected officials to have them sign the Congressional Declaration of Peace.
Host or join a candlelight vigil on September 21 to draw attention to the goals to end this war now.
Find and support people in your community who are holding activities during the week of action.
