No wonder no one listens

In her Sept. 3 column, "Who's Listening To War Protesters?" Rekha Basu seems
sincere in her opposition to the Iraq war. But in 2004 - like so many who pose
as "antiwar" voices when that stance is trendy and not perilous to Democrats'
ambitions - Basu endorsed the unashamedly pro-Iraq-war ticket of John Kerry and
John Edwards.

And now she wonders who's listening to war protesters? Certainly, campaigning
politicians shouldn't be expected to, after that hypocritical contingent chose
to fall on its own plowshare rather than renounce pro-war Democrats.

How very different electoral politics in Iowa (and America) might be if only
sunshine progressives like Basu actually put their fall votes where their summer
mouths were.
