US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation
J10 Update: Response to Tikkun, Get on the Bus, In the News & More

We hope that you're making plans to join the US Campaign to End the =20
Israeli Occupation, United for Peace and Justice, and more than 200 =20
other organizations in Washington, DC on June 10-11 for a historic =20
two-day mobilization to protest US support for Israel's 40 year-old =20
military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, East Jerusalem, and =20
Gaza Strip.

With your participation, we're hoping that this will be the =20
largest-ever protest in the history of the United States in favor of =20
Palestinian human rights and for a just peace between Palestinians and =20
Israelis. We are working closely with the various police authorities =20
to ensure that this will be a safe, legal, and permitted protest and =20
march, so everyone should come out!

US CAMPAIGN AND UFPJ RESPOND TO TIKKUN

On April 21, Rabbi Michael Lerner of Tikkun wrote an introductory note =20
to an article by Israeli peace activist Uri Avnery, entitled "How the =20
Anti-Israel Left Helps Perpetuate the Occupation". In his note, Rabbi =20
Lerner cited the June 10-11 mobilization and stated that "many" of the =20
organizers are united around the "dissolution of the State of Israel". =20
The US Campaign and UFPJ released yesterday the following open =20
letter to Tikkun in response, which can also be viewed by clicking here.

April 30, 2007

Rabbi Michael Lerner
Tikkun Community
2342 Shattuck Avenue #1200
Berkeley, CA 94704

Dear Rabbi Lerner,

On behalf of the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and United =20
for Peace and Justice, we are writing to reassert our position and =20
vision for the mobilization that our coalitions are organizing in =20
Washington, DC on June 10-11 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of =20
Israel's illegal military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, =20
Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. We also would like to express our =20
profound disappointment with your mischaracterizations of the June =20
10th and 11th actions. In an introductory note that you wrote to an =20
article by Uri Avnery, entitled "How the Anti-Israel Left Helps =20
Perpetuate the Occupation", you state that "many" of the organizers of =20
this mobilization are united around the "dissolution of the State of =20
Israel".

First of all, as you are likely aware, both of our coalitions are =20
working to end those very US policies that support and sustain =20
Israel's military occupation. Neither the US Campaign nor UFPJ =20
prescribe any particular political resolution for the Israel/Palestine =20
conflict. That is because we believe that as US-based coalitions, we =20
need to focus our efforts not on dictating to Palestinians and =20
Israelis how to end the occupation and create a just, lasting and =20
comprehensive peace, but rather on building a movement to reorient our =20
own country's foreign policy so that it supports a just peace based on =20
human rights, international law, and equal rights for all. We take =20
great offense at your implication that our coalitions are helping to =20
perpetuate Israel's military occupation.

Second, your claim that "many" of the organizers of the mobilization =20
are united around the "dissolution of the State of Israel" is =20
inaccurate. As you are likely aware, the only principles upon which =20
the more than 200 endorsing organizations are united on are:

* An end to US military, economic, diplomatic, and corporate support =20
for Israel's illegal military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, =20
Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.

* A change in US policy to one that supports a just peace between =20
Palestinians and Israelis based on equality, human rights and =20
international law, and the full implementation of all relevant UN =20
resolutions.

These are the exact same points of unity with which we approached =20
Tikkun back in December 2006 to see if your organization would have =20
liked then to have joined the US Campaign and UFPJ as an original =20
endorsing organization of this mobilization. You were even given the =20
opportunity to provide feedback before the call to action went public; =20
however, Tikkun declined to participate.

We are concerned that a leader of a progressive spiritual movement =20
would choose to interpret these broadly supported political demands as =20
a call for the "dissolution of the State of Israel." It is =20
particularly ironic because powerful organizations on the pro-Israeli =20
right=97those organizations which actually are working to perpetuate =20
Israel's military occupation=97do not even go so far in their =20
condemnations of this mobilization. For example, the "Anti-Defamation =20
League" states only that they are concerned that we will not provide a =20
"balanced view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict" during the =20
mobilization. Why you feel the need to outdo the ADL in your =20
condemnation of our effort is beyond our understanding.

It is a real shame that Tikkun continues to sit on its hands =20
"discussing how to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Occupation =20
of the West Bank" rather than join with the US Campaign and UFPJ to =20
make that commemoration a powerful and real protest against continuing =20
US support for occupation. We believe that Tikkun should help build =20
up this historic mobilization, rather than try to tear it down. We =20
believe Tikkun should in fact put its own Core Vision to action when =20
it states that the United States should use its "influence and =20
economic power" to end Israel's military occupation and that "We will =20
support efforts to convince the United States to condition aid to =20
Israel on the end of the Occupation."

Several Tikkun chapters have already endorsed this mobilization and =20
several Tikkun supporters have copied one of us on email =20
communications with you that urged you to retract your false =20
statements about our mobilization and instead join with us to make it =20
a success. We hope that you take this opportunity to do so and that =20
we can all unite on June 10-11 in Washington, DC to end US support for =20
Israel's illegal military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, =20
East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip, and change US policy to support a just =20
peace based on human rights and international law.

Sincerely yours,

"color: windowtext;">"How
the Anti-Israel Left Helps Perpetuate the Occupation"</span></a>, you state
that "many" of the organizers of this mobilization are united around the
"dissolution of the State of Israel".<br><br>First of all, as you are likel=
y aware, both of our
coalitions are working to end those very <st1:country-region w:st=3D"on">US=

policies that support and sustain <st1:country-region w:st=3D"on"><st1:plac=
e w:st=3D"on">Israel</st1:place></st1:country-region>'s military occupation=
.&nbsp;
Neither the US Campaign nor UFPJ prescribe any particular political resolut=
ion
for the Israel/Palestine conflict.&nbsp; That is because we believe that as
US-based coalitions, we need to focus our efforts not on dictating to
Palestinians and Israelis how to end the occupation and create a just, last=
ing
and comprehensive peace, but rather on building a movement to reorient our =
own
country's foreign policy so that it supports a just peace based on human
rights, international law, and equal rights for all.&nbsp; We take great off=
ense
at your implication that our coalitions are helping to perpetuate <st1:coun=
try-region w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on">Israel</st1:place></st1:count=
ry-region>'s
military occupation. <br><br>Second, your claim that "many" of the organize=
rs of the
mobilization are united around the "dissolution of the State of Israel" is
inaccurate.&nbsp; As you are likely aware, the only principles upon which t=
he
more than 200 endorsing organizations are united on are:<br><br>* An end to=
 US military, economic, diplomatic, and
corporate support for Israel's illegal military occupation of the Palestini=
an
West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.<br><br>* A change in US policy t=
o one that supports a just peace
between Palestinians and Israelis based on equality, human rights and
international law, and the full implementation of all relevant UN resolutio=
ns.<br><br>These are the exact same points of unity with which we
approached Tikkun back in December 2006 to see if your organization would h=
ave
liked then to have joined the US Campaign and UFPJ as an original endorsing
organization of this mobilization.&nbsp; You were even given the opportunit=
y to
provide feedback before the call to action went public; however, Tikkun
declined to participate.<br><br>We are concerned that a leader of a progres=
sive spiritual
movement would choose to interpret these broadly supported political demand=
s as
a call for the "dissolution of the State of Israel." &nbsp; It is particular=
ly
ironic because powerful organizations on the pro-Israeli right=97those
organizations which actually </span><b><u><span style=3D"font-size: 10pt; f=

nt-family: Verdana;">working to perpetuate <st1:country-region w:st=3D"on">=
<st1:place w:st=3D"on">Israel</st1:place></st1:country-region>'s
military occupation=97do not even go so far in their condemnations of this
mobilization.&nbsp; For example, the "Anti-Defamation League" states only t=
hat
they are concerned that we will not provide a "balanced view of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict" during the mobilization.&nbsp; Why you feel t=
he
need to outdo the ADL in your condemnation of our effort is beyond our
understanding.&nbsp;&nbsp; <br><br>It is a real shame that Tikkun continues=
 to sit on its
hands "discussing how to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Occupation=
 of
the West Bank" rather than join with the US Campaign and UFPJ to make that
commemoration a powerful and real protest against continuing US support for
occupation.&nbsp; We believe that Tikkun should help build up this historic
mobilization, rather than try to tear it down.&nbsp; We believe Tikkun shou=
ld
in fact put its own Core Vision to action when it states that the United St=
ates
should use its "influence and economic power" to end Israel's military
occupation and that "We will support efforts to convince the United States =
to
condition aid to Israel on the end of the Occupation."<br><br>Several Tikku=
n chapters have already endorsed this
mobilization and several Tikkun supporters have copied one of us on email
communications with you that urged you to retract your false statements abo=
