Dear Libris Fidelis,
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) protects the public
against serious injury or death by monitoring more than 15,000 types
of consumer products—everything from baby carriages to dishwashers.
The nominee who Bush has chosen to chair this agency is Michael
Baroody, the executive vice president for the National Association of
Manufacturers -- in other words, a fox to guard the henhouse. For
more than a decade, he has worked to weaken the ability of the
CPSC to regulate products and enforce vital consumer safety
protections.
One key rule that has already been compromised by the industry
group where Baroody worked is the disclosure of hazardous products.
In 2001, Fisher-Price Inc. was cited and paid a fined $1.1 million
because its Power Wheels toy, a battery-powered car for children,
had faulty brakes, was overheating and causing burns, and even set
fire to 22 houses and garages. None of this was reported by the
company.
Unfortunately, many companies choose to protect their profits by
avoiding a costly recall and don't report their dangerous products.
Michael Baroody has devoted his career to helping companies avoid
reporting requirements. Baroody is another industry shill nominee by
Bush and for big business.
If confirmed, decades of safety protections could be rolled back—go
to the Watchdog Blog to learn more and take action to stop
Baroody!
Best,
Daniel De Bonis
