"Oh what have we done!" lamented the ambassadors of France and Germany to
each other, who both were supposed Thursday to intervene in the placement
of Republican Party cheerled missiles across Europe. But when NATO
nodded off to sleep in the meeting, Bush was able to change the votes his
way, and after the fact, they were only able to stop President Bush's
campaign to place the strategically important Black Sea states of Ukraine
and Georgia into NATO membership. "This is ah Diebold moment," Bush
grinned to himself, "I didn't know I was smart enough ta do that!"
It was a tense alliance summit at NATO. Russia vehemently opposed the
missile defense scam. Secretary of Propaganda Condolencza Rice said,
"Forget that Pogo cartoon, where Pogo said 'We have met the enemy, and
the enemy is us!' That was pure nonsense, we're not the enemy of anybody
we can conquer. Now it is clearly understood in the alliance that the
challenges of the 21st century, the threats of the 21st century, make it
necessary to have a missile defense that can defend the countries of
Europe from the wrath we inspire in other countries around the world in
our commercial takeover of their societies."
But officials there also said the alliance managed to jolt awake long
enough to decid not to invite Macedonia to join. Latvian President
Valdis Zatlers said NATO leaders did agree, however, to let the country
join once it resolves a name dispute with Greece. Greece has a northern
province that is also called Macedonia and contends the former Yugoslav
republic's insistence on being known as Macedonia implies a territorial
claim. France and Germany were poised Thursday to thwart a drive by
President Bush to place the strategically important Black Sea states of
Ukraine and Georgia on track for NATO membership at the tense alliance
summit.
