Democratic Senator from New York Hillary Rodham-Clinton said, in accusing
her rival, Illinois Senator Barack Obama and his allies of trying to stop
people from voting for her, as some of his backers have called on her to
drop out of the presidential race, that "He wants to slap me down as a
woman and make my campaign be flatter than a pancake... because I'm a
woman competing with him! They would not be talking like that, putting
me down with gestures and posturing on stage, if I was a man! But I'm a
WO-man, and that's not going to look good for Senator Obama to keep
putting me down with the silent acting treatment of discrimination!"
The Obama campaign rejected the charge, dismissing Clinton's criticism as
"completely laughable. She's a woman, who will pay any attention to
HER?"
Senator Hillary Clinton appeared in a series of television interviews
that were conducted in states holding upcoming contests, saying that she
vowed to continue with her campaign as a viable competitor to the
Establishment candidate running against her, and she suggested that
Senator Obama and his supporters were scheming to keep those states from
participating in the election role of selecting the party's presidential
nominee. Senator Clinton said to a CBS affiliate inteviewer of KTVQ in
Billings, Montana, "My take on it is a lot of Senator Obama's supporters
want to end this race because they don't want people to keep voting.=20
That's just the opposite of what I believe. We want people to vote. I
want the people of Montana to vote, don't you?"
Obama Campaign spokesman Bill Burton said about the Obama Campaign's use
of innuendo campaign tactics: "That is completely laughable from a
campaign that thought the race would be over on February 5. We have
encouraged our supporters to do no such thing and Senator Obama was very
clear he supports her carrying on in this race."
Since Senator Obama generally is ahead in the race for the Democratic
nomination, with 1,631 delegates, including separately chosen party and
elected officials known as superdelegates, and he received
the endorcement from Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar on Monday, and
Clinton has about 1,501 delegates, according to the latest Associated
Press figures, both sides are relying heavily on voter impressions, and
such tactics as expoiting voter impressions in his portrayal of Hillary
Clinton's intellectual competitiveness has been used heavily by Barack
Obama in public appearances.
