As Johnson County Green Party liaison to the University of IowaAnti-war
Committee as well as a general member of UIAC for abouttwo and a half
years, on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. DaylightStupid Time, I attended
the first post-summer meeting of UniversityAnti-war Committee at the Iowa
City Public Library, room E. Byway of mention, Loralei Barth was also in
attendance. New Meeting Location For UIACThe Committee discussed a need
for a new meeting room, since theIowa Memorial Union building (IMU) will
probably be closed forthe rest of the year due to the basement being
flood-damaged! Isaid I would check on the suitability of the North Hall,
becausethe ill-fated Iowans For Economic Human Rights met for their firstme=
eting
there and there is a cafeteria that seems good for meetings.Others also
said they would check other venues. Republican National Convention
Welcoming Actions:Nothing yet is firm, but there are a few or maybe even
only onepossible choice to carpool to Minneapolis for the big protests ofthe
Republican National Convention in three weeks, September1 through 4.
Discussion indicated that the RNC begins MONDAY, September1st at 3 p.m.=20
There will be a lot of groups there from all over thenation, and they
hope to do various activities such as: MONDAY September 1st:--blockading
the convention center all day: it was mentioined thatfrom the various
participating anti-war committees that they plan oncombining
and surrounding the entire event for a total blockade! They might even
be going to have Fellujia-type car stop inspections inmilitary uniforms
to show the public what is going on in Iraq! Goodgrief!--make the
Coalition To End The War march at noon--I mentioned that Poor People's
Economic Human Rights Conferencewill hold a National Truth Commission in
the evening at ChristLutheran Church on Capitol Hill in St Paul TUESDAY
September 2nd:The Poor People's Economic Human Rights Committee will make
theirown march on the 2nd, which is going to be a 15-mile march aroundSaint
Paul starting at Mears Park in St Paul at 4pm, and go around theconvention
site and going around the capitol and back to the jail, wherethey will
hold a prayer for the two people who died from deliberateneglect in the
jail a few years ago. That is the purpose of the name ofthe
PPEHRC march, "March For Our Lives!" More information can be gained from
" nornc.org " and from the PoorPeople's Economic Human Rights Conference
websites. OTHER VETERAN GROUP ASSOCIATIONS:UIAC discussed association
with other pro-peace anit-war groups, and mentioned that the group Vets
For Freedom are pro-war andsupport funding and continuation of the war.
Possible planned events by UIAC and possibly other veteran pro-peace
groups include showing the video "Sir, No Sir", "WinterSoldier", "The
Ghosts of Abu Ghraib", and other videos thiscoming semester. Mentioned
also was that Uof I Medical Center is one of the primaryinvestigators in
our country about the sexual harrassment and rapesof our female
servicemembers in Iraq, and that the problem isactually getting MUCH
worse!!! People For Justice In Palestine representative Julie said that
PJP isshowing "Iron Wall" again on August 26th in the Iowa City PublicLibra=
ry
at 7 p.m., in Room A. It shows how the Israeli governmentis making it
impossible for a two-state solution to thePalestinian-Isreali issue. Wild
Rose Rebellion (they are anarchists) is having a Flood Relilefand Mutual
Aid meeting every saturday in the Iowa City PublicLibrary, usually
meeting rooms B or C, sometimes Room D. There were a number of internal
business items that I will notmention, and the meeting came to an end at
8 p.m. Daylight StupidTime with Loralei not being able to make her
presentation, which issometimes how things go in the UIAC way of doing
things (I saythat with all humor and candor!) Libris Fidelis Libris sept
