Seven presidential candidates on ballot
BY JASON CLAYWORTH =95 JCLAYWORTH@DMREG.COM =95 AUGUST 16, 2008

Iowans will have seven presidential candidates to choose from when they go =
to the polls in November.

And they will have other choices for state races.

The deadline for state and federal candidates to file nomination papers was=
Friday, fixing the Iowa ballot for November's general election.

Many of the additional candidates who have filed within the past month were=
members of the Green Party or even the Socialist Workers Party, according =
to information released Friday by Iowa Secretary of State Michael Mauro. So=
me were independents.

The ballots are not certified and candidates have until Aug. 22 to withdraw=
their names, but the Friday deadline gives Iowans a good indication of who=
 will seek election.

Wendy Barth, a 48-year-old software engineer from Cedar Rapids is one of th=
e candidates who filed in recent days. Barth is running for Iowa's 2nd Cong=
ressional District against Ottumwa Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks, inc=
umbent David Loebsack, a Democrat from Mount Vernon, and independent candid=
ate Brian White of North Liberty.

"I think the whole issue of partisan politics feels more like a football ga=
me than a debate about how we want to be governed, and I think people want =
to get away from that," said Barth, who filed this week as a Green Party ca=
ndidate.
