"You're trying not to answer the damn question," the chairman of the
Senate Judiciary Committee accused Attorney General Michael Mukasey.=20
"You're ducking questions so you don't have to commit yourself on whether
waterboarding is torture, despite your promise last year to study whether
it is illegal. Now tell us what you came up with!"
"Listen, you little twerp, Bush says I don't have to tell you Democrats
anything, and that's the way it's going to be, understand? Now stick
it!"
"You can be impeached," a lawyer consultant aqnd an aide threatened.
"Oh...? Okay," Mukasey said, "you Democrats're gonna chance making the
Commander In Chief over the whole United States mad at you, huh? Well,
since Bush is above the law, you can't do anything to me, and I will not
rule about whether waterboarding is a form of illegal torture or not,
because it is not part of the current interrogation methods used by the
CIA on terror suspects. We deny everything, including that there even is
such a thing as a water board. What are we talking about here,
surfboards? Is surfing a form of torture? You Democrats better go tell
Annette Funicello and the Beach Boys about that then!"
His evasive non-answer made a very few Democrats angry, because,
they said, although an educated, qualified attorney general should be
able to address a simple legal question, they were afraid of him and of
Bush.
"It is not enough to say that waterboarding is not currently authorized,"
complained Senator Patrick Leahy, Chair of the Judiciary Committee. "I
wish that my other fellow Democrats would stand up to Bush and his
cabinet, and say that torture and illegality have no place in the United
States of America. I'll go that far, without accusing George Bush of
committing federal and international war crimes. But I don't want to be
all alone in all of this. Where's Ted Kennedy and Barbara Boxer and
Obama and Clinton? I'm all alone in these chambers!"
"Tragically, this administration has so twisted our United States of
America's role, our law and values that our own State Department, our
military officers and, apparently, USA's top law enforcement officer, are
now instructed by the White House to not say anything about waterboarding
is being torture and is illegal," Leahy said. "This situation is what
happened when we invaded overthrew Haiti four years ago and Iraq! This
is what happened when the US Supreme Court Electoral College votes for
Bush's election to President in 2000 and made Al Gore run away from his
own shadow. This is what happened when we allowed suspension of Habeas
Corpus. This is what happened when we opened Abu Gahraib and Guantanamo
and shipped rendition prisoners to Egypt and Romania and Poland. This is
what happened when we allowed Bush to subsidize the terrorists in
Dominican Republic who overthrew Haiti back in 2004. This is wh at
happened when we passed Patriot Act. Nothing is ever illegal that Bush
does! At least he didn't lie about having sex with some woman, or we'd
have to impeach him right away for that high crime! But then, alas, we
Democrats stopped the Republicans from impeaching their own George H. W.
Bush because he would have gone to prison for forty years!"
