'Race and Rights in the 18th & 19th Centuries'
James Campbell, professor of American Studies and Africana Studies at
Brown University, will speak at 7:00 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, on "Navigating
the Past: Slavery, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and Brown University."

The lecture, which will be in Room 107, English-Philosophy Building on
the UI campus, is sponsored by 18th- and 19th-Century Studies;
International Programs; the Departments of American Studies, English, and
History; the African Studies Program; the Caribbean, Diaspora and
Atlantic Studies Program; and the UICHR.
SYMPOSIUM: 'Climate Change and Human Rights'
A day-long symposium at The University of Iowa College of Law will focus
on the intersection between climate change and human rights. The event
will be Friday, Feb. 15, in Levitt Auditorium, Boyd Law Building on the
UI campus.

The symposium will open at 8:30 a.m. with opening remarks by Burns H.
Weston, law professor emeritus and senior scholar at the UICHR. Morning
panels will examine climate justice and climate science. The keynote
address, "Future Climate Change: Migration and Adaptation," will be
delivered by Professor Jerald L. Schnoor at 12:30 p.m., followed by
panels on the greening of energy policies and a second panel on climate
justice.

The symposium is free and open to the general public. Sponsors include
the UI College of Law, the Journal of Transnational Law and Contemporary
Problems, the Iowa Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research,
the International Law Society, and the UICHR. Lunch will be provided for
attendees.

HUMAN RIGHTS AT LARGE: Child Soldiers
UN report  spotlights  continued recruitment issues
A recent report by the United Nations concludes that the recruitment and
use of children in armed conflicts is continuing in at least a dozen
countries worldwide.

According to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, there is a close link between
child recruitment for armed conflict and the "convenient concentration of
vulnerable childr en" in refugee camps due to internal displacement.
