This is my reply to Cerene, who responded to my posting when sheawarded
me "Best Answer" status: Hello Libris FIdelis (greenpartyron),
You have received a message from another user!
From: Cerene
Subject: Highways
Message: Hi, I'm the one that posted the question on the cons of building
a highway. You see, I'm a student in Senior Honors Earth Science and my
class is doing a debate on the extension of the Northwest Parkway in
Colorado. My group was chosen to defend the con side of it. There wasn't
much information on the parkway online, so I had to turn to other
methods. At first, I thought that the only cons were that it causes
pollution and destroys the wildlife. Otherwise, I thought that there were
only pros to building the highway. The highway does give more people
access to different jobs and it does help the economy with the building
of more businesses along its route. I know that the other group is going
to use those facts against us so do you have any ideas on how I can
counter that? Are there any other side effects to this highway? Also, I
didn't quite understand what you meant by "brings more 'off-roaders' to
attack the natural environmen t and the parts about the rip-rap. Thank
you so much for helping me out, it was greatly appreciated!

My posted answer to Cerene: About the job creation part of creating new
highways, there already are some "super" super highways and freeways
enough to handle our population. Most new highways are created for
commerce, not population mobility. They contribute to urban sprawl. The
idea is to get jobs into the city, where most of the poor are. I agree
that a lot of the poor are in rural areas, however, most poor live in the
urban cities, and that is where job creation is needed.Of course, the
same applies to new commercial business as it does to building a new fast
food drive-through: land is more expensive in the city than in the
sub-urban areas and rural areas. If a fifth of an acre costs two-million
dollars in Orange County, California, how many $5.00 hamburger meals and
$1.50 carbonated drinks have to be sold to pay for the workers' wages,
purchase of the land and construction of the building and parking lot,
pay taxes and the owner's profits? That effects a cost-increase
("inflation") on the product, the same as it does for a manufacturer, so
highways are the means of getting more business by creating urban
sprawl. It is a "Catch-22" dog-eat-dog problem situation. But urban
sprawl "eats up" farmland and wildlife habitat! How we address these
issues will determine our ability to manage our over-population issue
which is the profit motive for more urban sprawl."Humans are really
sub-human with the ability to be human if only they would try. -- Ronald
Willet Kinum 1996"
