This morning, I called in to The Exchange, normally hosted byBen Kieffer
but today it was hosted by a guest host whose nameI forgot to write down
(I was waiting on the telephone line, andyou never know when they will
cut in to let you talk over theair!). The second half of the program
hosted gentleman named "Jerry"De Witt, who was from The Leopold Center
For SustainableAgriculture, which is located at Iowa State
University, and thatinstitution was founded in 1988 by the Iowa General
Assembly:
Jerald R. DeWitt
Director, Leopold Center
Professor of Entomology
209 Curtiss Hall
Iowa State University

Interim Policy Initiative leader
Jerry DeWitt
Mr. Dewitt, whom I presume has a doctorate degree, since heis a
professor, gave an excellent technological and scientificexplanation of
the programs by Center For SustainableAgriculture, but my Green Party
ears detected something that Ifelt was left out: the "grass roots"
involvement of futureyounger-generation farmers, as a part of the topic
ofsustainable agriculture. Professor De Witt mentioned a variety of
topics, such assustainability with regard to technology, management, economi=
cs
and other issues. But I called in with the following"sketchy" account of
my call, since I did not follow my ownnotes as well as I had wanted to (I
guess I am finally sufferingfrom my own old age... I need to scrape
together enoughmoney as I can to buy a digital recorder with removableindiv=
idual
digital cards so I can refer to them): After I said "Good morning", I
said something like "Green Partyof the United States has in its Party
Platform a reference tograss roots Democracy; in relation to grass roots
Democracy, and that fits in with what you referenced about sustainabilityori=
ented
to technology, management, economics and a few otherareas. With regard to
grass-roots Democracy, how much promotiondoes Center For Sustainable
Agriculture give to encouragingfuture generations of young people, and
not just to encouragechildren of family farms and ranches to remain on
their farmsand ranches, but also to non-agricultural young generations
whodo not live on farms but want to get involved with agriculture, and to
guide them to not embrace harmful confinementlivestock operations but to
utilize more humane methods ofraising livestock?" I do not have his
answer written down (again, a digitalrecorder would have been great
here), but tomorrow theprogram will be obtainable on the Iowa Public
Radio web siteunder the heading of "The Exchange". I hope I represented
Green Party well. This is what we needto do more of as members to
attract people to the ONLYparty in our nation that has Democracy written
in its partyplatform! I seldom see news releases on anything we do, butwri=
ting
letters to editors and speaking on public broadcastprograms with proper
references to Green Party is essential toour national and local parties'
growth! Ron Kinuma.k.a. Libris FidelisIowa City
