"We're just doing what the Republicans told us to do," Harry Reid
explained. "We could have done something constructive, like raise the
minimum wage out of the mid-poverty level, but we agree with Republicans,
the poor earn too much as it is. It's far more politically expedient to
do as Bush has advocated, make meaningless little chips at the budget
deficit under the guise of stimulating the economy, and make people think
that we're really doing something constructive."
Noting that the Congressional approval for the economic aid plan and its
cash rebates will not come soon enough to affect the recession this
year, and that the $168- billion subsidy to allegedly help the
faltering economy really only means that the rich will continue to be
able to buy tax-exempt treasury notes to fund our national debt, an
effect that will only increase that debt, Reid expressed his opinon about
how the government making payments to over 130-million people will at
least get piggy banks clinking.

"When you ask people what they will do with the money, they often say
they will pay off their credit card bills," said David Wyss, who is the
Chief Economist at Standard & Poor's in New York City. "People may mean
it when they say it, but when you look at what they actually do, most of
the money gets spent."
"That doesn't matter," Reid countered. "The important thing is to create
an image that we're actually doing something for the economy. What the
people believe is more important than the actual situation. That's the
Republican strategy, and we Democrats agree whole-heartedly.
Hillary Clinton said that strategy is straight out of The Wizard of Oz,
where Toto pulls back the curtain to discover that the Wizard is pulling
cords and levers to manipulate the image. Retorted Reid, "The image we
create could prevent the reality of a long recession. We certainly hope
so! And like Obama says, hope is a very powerful tool, so don't listen
to Hillary!"
