Poor peoples' Economic Human Rights Conference =96

Minneapolis MN - Part Three

This posting of Poor Peoples' Economic Human Rights

Conference - Part Three, held at Minneapolis Minnesota,

continues my insufficient notes (per my being a novice) of the
meeting after lunch:

PRE-PPHREC ORGANIZATIONS:

NATIONAL UNION OF THE HOMELESS: created by Leona

Smith, who brought together the families of the homeless to

take over abandoned H.U.D. houses.

Bob Smith and Willie Baptist met Cheri Honkala of NWRU,

and they drafted a national plan for national organization of

homeless advocates.

But they did not know how to deal with drugs in the

organization. This was a period when drugs took over the

African American communities across our nation =96 cocaine

destroyed the NUH, which was made up primarily of males.

KENSINGTON WELFARE RIGHTS UNION: was formed to

utilize all of the experiences and tactics of the previous

organizations in drug-infested areas. It was discovered that

these same problems had existed in other countries around

the world over several generations, so this organization was

formed with an international outlook, from which the plan was

to necessarily look for solutions and ideas from the world

outside of our USA.

It was decided that, like the people of other nations, the poor

people themselves had to be part of the process, to work on

eliminating the obstacles to poor people improving their

situations.

June 1997: first march "from Liberty Bell to the United Nations"

June 1998: Bus tour around the country, with leaders of

different groups participating to witness what was going on and

to interact with other local groups

October 1998: first Poor People's Summit

1999: March of the Summit

This is really important, because there are a lot of things in

this that are being left out, about people who spent their entire

existence to build the movement.

If it was not for older women telling Cheri Honkala to get some

education on these issues, about what was happening and

had happened and why, she would never have gotten involved

at all. What got Cheri involved was her arrest for her having to

claim government financial support for her family and for her

education expenses, in her effort to improve her economic

situation.

You COULD NOT and still CAN NOT get a Pell Grant AND

public poverty assistance at the same time! She could hardly

make expenses when, at the time, Cheri was teaching in front

of her high school students and two sheriff deputies came into

her class and arrested her on two felony charges for welfare

fraud, because without that dual funding, she could not finish

her education and feed her children!

She had been greatly moved by the movie Norma Rae, and

she was inspired to begin walking with protest signs around a

government center, when Marian Kramer heard about "this

crazy woman" who had been arrested and was protesting her

plight. As a result, Cheri was put on United Way posters and

she received some legal help, wherein she pled "not guilty".

But the charges were dropped IN THE INTEREST OF JUSTICE,

rather than having this precedent-setting case be resolved so

it would help other impoverished people also trying to survive

and obtain an education to improve themselves!

WHERE WE ARE NOW:

PPEHRC now has well over 100 organizations which identify

themselves with poor people's rights, some of the organizations

include some in India, Brazil, Europe, Venezuela, such

organizations as KRRS and WSF.

BOB BROWN: He was the first union guy to put homelessness

into the union relationship. He was with United Electrical

Workers Union, and he organized all of the electrician shops.

But due to globalization, those shops were closed and went

south to other countries, and so Bob became a homeless man.

UNITE HERE: This was the strongest union who gave

PPEHRC money to do its work, and has been instrumental in

putting the message out to the public.

WORLD SOCIAL FORUM PROCESS (WSF): This

organization was founded by a collection of Brazilian

movements around about 1999 to 2000. It was formed to get

poor people and advocates around the world to join together in

the same way as the corporations do every year in Switzerland,

in their World Economic Forum. The World Social Forum

Process created the slogan "Another World Is Possible."

2001, 2002 and 2003: first three WSFP forums were held in

Porto Alegre, Brazil. From 12,000 people at the first forum to

increasing to over 60,000 people from around the world came

to each of these, one including Cheri Honkala.

2004: Mumbai (Bombay) India

2005: Porto Alegre, Brazil

2006: split between several countries, held in

Venezuela, Mali and Pakistan

2007: Kenya

At 4:45 PM we took a break for dinner, in which we all

walked across the freeway to a very nice Chinese

restaurant and gorged ourselves on a delicious meal

provided by PPEHRC.

At 6:35 PM we resumed the meeting, which was mostly

oriented on the September 2, 2008 march that is being

planned, which will be a march from Minneapolis across

the river to Saint Paul, Minnesota, and then it will become

about a fifteen mile circular march around the state

capitol to protest the blatant Minnesota state policies

against the poor that are used by other states as a guide

to repressing the poor.

I will not report on this aspect of the meeting, which ended

at 7:25 PM. However, due to some very flawed planning

and negligent arranging of my trip, and with my grateful

thanks to Joelle Osterhaus for helping me ovecome these

problems at great effort and expense on her part, my

PPEHRC paid transportation and lodging was only to

Monday morning. As I had to return on a 6 AM flight, I

missed the Monday session which covered:

What are the areas of focus and why

What we need to do to accomplish our plan

What we need to accomplish this goal

What you need to build your local group and

to grow

In spite of the horrendous misfortune I was experiencing

upon arriving in Minneapolis due to a lack of proper

communication, and in the local problem I suffered in

getting back home from Cedar Rapids airport, I really

enjoyed the camaraderie and intellectual insights of all

of the participants in the conference. And, in spite of

La Quinta motel's insufficient facility for an intended

meeting of our size, which would have been even more

populous had not the air flights been cancelled due to

bad weather, the motel itself was very nice and

comfortable and had the room for lodging our entourage.

 the time, Cheri </SPAN><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">was teaching in fro=
nt</SPAN></P>
<P class=3DMsoNormal><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">of her high school stu=
dents and </SPAN><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">two sheriff deputies came =
into</SPAN></P>

 </SPAN><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">her on two felony charges for welfa=

=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">education and feed her children!<O></O></SPAN></P>

gin walking with </SPAN><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">protest signs aroun=

n </SPAN><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">Marian Kramer heard about "this</S=

<P class=3DMsoNormal><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">crazy woman" who </SPA=
N><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">had been arrested and was protesting her<=
/SPAN></P>

SPAN>As </SPAN><SPAN style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt">a result, Cheri was put on U=
