"Maybe I was just a little tiny bit too much of a hawk," John McCain said
Monday, "but I think that it was justified."
"I forgot where I was when I was in Viet Nam," he continued, "I wish my
position on waterboarding had been a little more thought out, but hell,
they're our enemy, it's not like they were us! We're not the enemy!=20
We're the heros!"
"If I can win the White House, I know that I must convince our
nation that George Bush's policy in Iraq is succeeding. If I can't, then
I lose. I lose, and the Republican party can't do a thing about it," he
said.
"Well, wait a minute," McCain immediately retracted. "Let me not put it
that stark," the front-running GOP candidate said to reporters in his
campaign bus. "Let me just put it this way without lying to you about it:
Americans will judge my candidacy first and foremost on how they believe
I can lead the country both from our economy and for national security,
now that Bush has really loused it up for us. Obviously, Iraq will play a
role in their judgment of my ability to handle national security, and I
just can't blow them up like Bush did."
"If I may, I'd like to retract what I said about 'I'll lose.' I know I
probably will. But I don't think there's any doubt that how they judge
Iraq because of Bush will also have a direct relation to their judgment
of me, my support of the surge, my mindless support of Bush, and all of
the stupid dumb things Bush has done with my complacency," McCain added.
"Clearly, I am tied to it to a large degree. I just wish someone would
blame Bill Clinton for all of this or something."
