"When the Republicans passed legislation to fund non-stem cell research
in the universities as a form of university subsidization, I thought I
was going to find a new avenue to cure viri, which is the correct plural
form of virus," said a Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate
student, who had received a $30,000 prize for his research on destroying
drug-resistant bacteria and keeping medical and food-processing equipment
sterile. "But what I created using the Republican subsidized grant,
well, it just kept growing and growing, and now it's breathing on its
own! The whole body of viri just pulses when it breathes, and you can
actually hear it breathe!"
Timothy Lu, 27, was named winner of the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize on
Wednesday for developing processes to attack bacteria strains that
increasingly resist antibiotics, and in doing so, he had accidently
switched to virus research. On one of Lu's investigations which
analyzes the engineering of viruses ... "They're called viri, viri, viri
is the correct plural of virus," Lu corrected.
Anyway, whatever! The process is called bacteriophage, and it is
intended to destroy the biological process that bacteria use to resist
antibiotics. In this proposed process, a patient has only a minimal need
for antibiotics to fight his or her infection, with much fewer related
adverse reactions. But the model began to expand, and then to breathe!
"The Republicans are furious! They think I was working with stem
cells when I found this... this thing! They want me to return my grant,
to cut me off! It was only while I was working at a hospital as part of
a graduate course, and I saw many patients who contracted new infections
due to already-compromised immune systems or equipment that is extremely
difficult to keep sterile," Lu said. "But I had no idea that by
investigating the viri part of it that I would discover that in the
laboratory, it could reproduce and become a living community of its own
self on such a massive scale!"
He said, "Earlier I had proceeded on the idea that there had to be a
solution for these infections. It looks like the viri might have found a
defensive solution for countering my scientific interference to their
existence! We don't know where this can go, so far, it has not yet
learned how to speak! I'm not really sure if it knows what we're
thinking yet or not. We're being careful."
