I thought "Sicko" was a great movie. It gave us a lot of anecdotal information
about the US, Cuban, British and French systems of health care.
One of the film's weakness was it's lack of definitions. I usually think of
Cuba as socialized medicine in a "socialist" country; the British National
Health Service as a socialized health system in a capitalist country and single
payer national health insurance as public insurance for all.
Although a National Health Service was a significant part of the health care
debate in the 1970's, it is not at this time, which I think shows the movement
of the whole debate about health care to the Right in the USA. In a National
Health Service, physicians are employed by the government, but, at least in
England, malpractice claims are decided by a government tort claims board.
Malpractice law as a lawyer speciality is virtually nonexistent in England.
There is a small National Health Service Corps in the United States. I was a
member for three years. The NHSC physicians work in underserved community
health centers.
Peace,
Bob
