What happened yesterday is what was supposed to happen four years ago,
when Howard Dean's orange brigade, those eager kids in orange caps,
seemed to be everywhere just before the caucuses. But on caucus day, they
didn't show up. Maybe a lot were out of towners, or too young to vote, or
drive...
But then consider this year: One in five Democratic caucus goers was
under 30. Up to 60 percent of Democratic caucus-goers and 30 percent of
Republican caucus-goers were predicted to be attending a caucus for the
first time. if the Iowa Poll is right, 72 percent of the voters who
vaulted Obama into first place, were first-timers.
The evidence of yesterday's high turnout keeps pouring in. Everyone I've
spoken to was at a site where attendance about doubled compared to a year
ago. The long waits to get registered, the lack of seating space and the
trouble parking are all testimony to the high volume of new, first-time
caucus goers. If that causeed some disorganization, well, what a great
problem to have!
A lot of factors probably deserve credit for the new voter turnout. Great
organizing by campaign staff and volunteers, and get out the vote efforts
by non-partisan organizations like Rock the Vote are two.
But I believe what really did it is that people started paying enough
attention to be seriously ticked off about the Iraq War and where the
country's been heading. They've had enough and are ready to finally make
their voices heard.

New Hampshire invented the state primary in 1903 to put an end to party
machine politics and to put the voter into control of selecting the
candidates, because they were too smart to continue in the caucus circus.
It is time for Iowa to come into the real world of modern life! End the
caucus. Bring in the state primary with instant run-off voting! Only the

People were mulling around the courtroom, people were thinning out but
refused to concede defeat. This is wasting an entire night to play
politics like little children, rather than to just have a primary instant
runoff vote and get the issue decided by the tally numbers! THEN the
people cannot leave their groups until the tally is ratified! My gosh
this is so stupid! This is how communism works! THIS challenge is faced
by Green Party, getting people to THINK so they will join us in putting

The caucuses exist for a reason my friend.
They are quite effective as a vetting process to show the organization
and true support (the support by the people who are willing to get out
and be active, and actually DO something) of the candidates.
The people who go out to caucus are the same types of people who will
actually go out and vote.
A whole lot of people have opinions, but a smaller number will back it up
by caucusing and voting.
I think, with this in mind, that the Iowa Caucuses ARE an accurate
representation of the people, nationwide, who matter most to the
politicians; the ones who will actually leave their houses and computers
to physically vote.
I rue the day when all you have to do is go to a website and click the
