The local Hy-Vee will give a 5 cent credit for each canvas bag. However, be sure to ask for that credit, because some check-out clerks don't know about it.

Subject: [Iowa-dx] true canvas bag stories

I have a bunch of canvas bags - probably a dozen of them. I take them everywhere, and use them all the time, yet I have never run out of plastic sacks for my garbage, not even close.

One time I took a canvas bag into KMart. I handed it to the cashier and said," Please use this bag.", she looked at it quizzically, tossed it on the floor and proceeded to put my purchases in a plastic bag!
Another time, in Home Depot, I was a little slow in offering my canvas bag. The clerk had already started filling a plastic bag, so I made her take my purchases out of the plastic bag, and put them into the canvas bag. She then tossed the unwanted plastic bag in the trash can.
We have a long way to go.
