Members of the Iowa Green Party will hold their biennial state conv=
ention and
presidential preference vote on Saturday, May 17, 2008, from 2:30 -=
4:30 p.m.
at the Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room A. The convention is =
open to
anyone interested in joining the Green Party, and will be proceeded=
by a meeting
of the state central committee.

Keynote speakers will include Dr. Maureen McCue, of Physicians for =
Social
Responsibility, and Randall Wilson, legal director for Iowa's ACLU.=
Musical
entertainment will be provided by Pigs in Clover and The Thompsons.=
Members
will plan an upcoming petition drive to get the Green presidential =
nominee on
the Iowa ballot.

Iowa Greens will be selecting delegates to the Green National Nomin=
ating
Convention, which will be held in Chicago on July 12th.
There are currently four candidates competing for the Green party p=
residential
nomination, including 6-term Congresswoman from Georgia Cynthia McK=
inney, now a
resident of California; activist and film actor Jesse Johnson of We=
st Virginia;
activist and Green Party organizer Kat Swift of San Antonio, Texas;=
and air
quality specialist and engineer Kent Mesplay of California. "It say=
s a great
deal about the Green Party that we have attracted candidates of the=
ir caliber,"
said Wendy Barth, IAGP co-chair and 2006 Green gubernatorial candid=
ate. "Most
are not well-known names, but each has had some impressive accompli=
shments.
Their work is inspiring."

Last year, Iowa Green and Libertarian Parties were represented by t=
he ACLU's
Randall Wilson in a successful case which gained Iowans the right t=
o register to
vote as members of third parties. Starting from 0, the Iowa Green P=
arty had, as
of the end of April, officially 50 members. "That's 50 people who h=
ave filled
out an Iowa voter registration from and checked 'Green," but we kno=
w we have
many more than that interested or supporting the Green Party," said=
Daryl
Northrop, IAGP co-chair and 2004 Green candidate for U.S.Senate. "W=
hen Iowans
were able to register Green from 2001-2002, the Iowa Green Party's =
rate of
growth was the fastest of any state Green Party in the country, end=
ing at about
2600. We are optimistic we'll see a steady increase in membership t=
hroughout
the coming months.
