As a union member, a supporter of green politics since
the 1980s and someone who has run three times for
public office as a Green, I must say that I am deeply
saddened by the fantastic, self serving and sectarian
character of this discussion.
In the overwhelming majority of cases those unions
that are talking about supporting candidates other
than Democrats aren't talking about forming a labor
party, much less endorsing Greens. What they have
typically done is support corporatist Republicans such
as Pitaki.
Why labor should or would support a marginal Green
candidate is utterly beyond me and that Greens would
take such a proposition seriously is evidence that the
hubris of a sect is inversely proportional to its
actual influence.
It should be recalled that at the 2000 convention the
Green Party warmly welcomed Labor Party organizer the
late Tony Mazzochi as a key note speaker and endorsed
the Labor Party program. Of course, like the Green
Party today the Labor Party is not in particularly
good shape. Nevertheless, the idea of an independent
party for labor remains a key issue for many labor
progressives. If Greens really want to do serious
outreach to progressive workers they'd get a lot
further endorsing the idea of an independent labor
party than with self serving pleas to vote Green.
