An ACTION ALERT from the Metro Washington Council,
AFL-CIO
June 8, 2004
Nearly 40 local unionized Metro parking workers stand to lose
their jobs by the end of this month when a new, non-union
contractor takes over Metro's parking operations. Please join
Parking and Service Workers Local 27's campaign to persuade
Metro management to require the new contractor to hire the
current employees. Click here now to take action:
http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/ProtectMETROworkers/d7we3i2f8dnd7
Metro ended the current parking contract following allegations
that the contractor couldn't account for hundreds of thousands
of dollars of parking revenue. After a great deal of public
finger-pointing between the contractor and Metro, a few workers
were fired without due process, while the remainder were cleared
after thorough investigation.
Nevertheless, Metro recently awarded the parking contract to a
Connecticut company. The new contract goes into effect on June
28 but contains no requirement to hire the current employees.
These local workers are predominantly immigrants and most must
work more than one job to make ends meet. Please help save these
local jobs by clicking here now:

METRO General Manager Richard White
----THIS LETTER WILL BE SENT IN YOUR NAME----
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],
As a Washington area resident, I am very concerned about an
issue affecting a group of Metro contract employees, workers in
Metro parking lots who will could lose their jobs on June 28
when a new contractor takes over the parking operations.
More than 40 people stand to lose their jobs through no fault of
their own. They are hard-working individuals who should not be
punished for the alleged acts of other people.
I urge you to use the authority of your position as Metro
General Manager to assist these workers. Insist that the new
parking contractor retain the current Metro parking workers,
since they have been thoroughly checked out, cleared, and are
experienced in Metro's parking operations.
Please don't let these local workers fall through the cracks.
----END OF LETTER TO BE SENT----
Sincerely,
joseph Dangelo
