Howie Hawkins Calls for United Nations to Enforce a Ceasefire and=20
End Israel's Military Occupation of Palestinian Territories
Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for US Senate for New York, said=20
today that the US government should use its leadership to effect an=20
immediate ceasefire in the Middle East before it escalates into an all out=20
war involving multiple countries. He condemned the Bush administration=E2=
=80=99s=20
unconditional support for Israel=E2=80=99s military attacks in Gaza and Leb=
anon.
Hawkins said that an international peacekeeping force should be deployed to=
=20
end the Israeli military occupation of Palestinian territories and its=20
operations in Gaza and Lebanon and to stop attacks against Israel by=20
Palestinian forces. The United States has been the principal country=20
blocking implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions 242 (1967) and=20
338 (1973), which require Israel to withdraw from the occupied territories.
"Ultimately, peace can only be achieved through negotiations between the=20
Israeli and Palestinian leaderships. It can't be imposed by others. But=20
peace cannot come under the oppression of a military occupation. The=20
occupied territories have become little more than a prison camp for=20
Palestinian civilians and now Israel is depriving residents of access to=20
their means of survival, including food, water, and electricity. The United=
=20
States must unequivocally state that Israel cannot expect continued US=20
military and economic aid so long as Israel=E2=80=99s military occupation o=
f the=20
Palestinian territories continues. Palestinian people are being deprived of=
=20
the most elementary human rights, and are subjected to a never-ending=20
process whose intended outcome appears to be their complete dispossession=20
and expulsion from their homeland," noted Hawkins.
Hawkins said the US should also immediately recognize the democratically=20
elected Palestinian government and restore funding. =20
Hawkins also condemned Hillary Clinton=E2=80=99s unconditional support for =20=
Israel=E2=80=99s=20
policies. In a November 2005 visit to a section of separation wall being=20
built around Jerusalem, Clinton said, "This is not against the Palestinian=20
people. This is against the terrorists." In a December 11, 2005 speech at=20
Yeshiva University, Hillary Clinton called Israel, "not only our ally; it i=
s=20
a beacon of what democracy can and should mean...If the people of the Middl=
e
East are not sure what democracy means, let them look to Israel."=20
Hawkins said, =E2=80=9CStates that confer rights based on religion, whether=
Jewish=20
or Islamic, are inherently discriminatory and undemocratic. US support for=20
Israel=E2=80=99s policies of discrimination against native Muslim and Chris=
tian=20
Palestinians, as well as its long-time covert support for Islamic =20
fundamentalist movements as a counterweight to secular Arab nationalist =20
movements, is one of the root causes of conflict and violence in the Middle=20=
=20
East.=E2=80=9D
"The current Israeli attacks on Gaza and Lebanon come immediately after the=
=20
Hamas and Fatah factions of the Palestinian leadership jointly put forth a=20
peace proposal that implicitly recognized Israel, one of the alleged key=20
demands of both the American and Israeli governments. This unfortunately=20
repeats a familiar pattern of disruption of the peace process by the Israel=
i=20
leadership at key moments," Hawkins added.
A former Marine who organized opposition to the Vietnam War, Hawkins is=20
challenging incumbent Hillary Clinton=E2=80=99s hawkish policies toward=20
Israel/Palestine, Iraq, and Iran. Hawkins is running with a "Peace Slate" o=
f=20
Green Party candidates in New York, including Malachy McCourt for Governor,=
=20
Alison Duncan for Lt. Governor, Rachel Treichler for Attorney General, and=20
Julia Willebrand for Comptroller.=20
