Largest U.S. Peace Coalition Calls on Congress
to Take Immediate Action to End the War
Antiwar movement sees broad mandate for peace in Tuesday's election

New York, New York -- Widespread opposition to the Iraq war led voters to
change the face of Congress yesterday. United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ),
the nation's largest antiwar coalition, described the results as a clear
popular mandate for peace and called on the new Congress to take immediate
action to end the war. 

Kevin Martin, Executive Director of Peace Action and a member of UFPJ's
Steering Committee, said, "The peace movement played a powerful role in this
election. Our demonstrations and peace vigils, voter education and massive
get-out-the-vote efforts brought hundreds of thousands of peace voters to
the polls. Conventional wisdom has credited antiwar bloggers with making
Iraq the central issue in the election, but grassroots local antiwar
organizers in one Congressional district after another led the way."

In the wake of Tuesday's vote, member groups and supporters of United for
Peace and Justice are requesting meetings with their newly elected
Representatives to urge them to take action in the very earliest days of the
new session to bring the troops home from Iraq.

The peace movement is urging Congress to:

1. Bring all U.S. troops home immediately;

2. Support the Iraqi people with significant funds for Iraqi-led
reconstruction work;

3. Support an Iraqi-led reconciliation process;

4. Declare that the U.S. will not pursue a permanent military presence in
Iraq and the U.S. will not attempt to control Iraqi oil.

George Martin, a Co-Chair of United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ), said, "The
people have given Congress a clear mandate for peace. Congress must now move
quickly to implement the will of both the American and Iraqi people. Bush
may have sacked Rumsfeld, but it's going to take Congressional action to get
him to end the war. The peace movement is going to hold all elected
Representatives accountable."

United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) is the largest U.S. peace and justice
coalition with more than 1,400 member groups under its umbrella. Since its
founding in October 2002, UFPJ has spurred hundreds of protests and rallies
around the country, including the largest marches against the Iraq war.
