Dreier Brigands Throw Out Peace Activists Following Citizen's Arrest Warrant
Tuesday, in Glendora, California, at the home office of hawkish GOP
Congressman David Dreier, aides to the lawmaker shoved peace activists out
of Dreier's office and locked the door after the activists issued a
citizen's arrest warrant for the lawmaker. With John Gannon of Free Speech
TV rolling the camera, activists demanded to see "whoever is in charge
around here."
Two six-feet tall beefy Dreier aides emerged from their offices, admonishing
peace activists to make an appointment if they wanted to talk about Dreier's
position on the US occupation of Iraq.
"We've tried to make appointments for four years," said Jamie Ramano of the
Foothills Peace Coalition. "David Dreier and his staff have refused to
meet with us." Activists, including Tighe Barry and Linda Milazzo of Code
Pink and Winograd and Kathy Green of Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles
suggested they hold the meeting then and there.
"What are we doing in Iraq?" asked Milazzo, holding a white board sign that
read "Cost of War: Over 3100 Americans, 650,000 Iraqis Dead."
An incredulous Dreier aide responded, "We are in Iraq to fight the war on
terror. Didn't you see what happened on 911?"
Barry and Winograd interjected, "911? What did the Iraqis have to do with
911? Absolutely nothing."
When Winograd unfurled a citizen's arrest warrant for Dreier, one aide tried
to block the television camera with his hand but was no match for cameraman
Gannon. Winograd held firm. "The Citizens of the United States of America
charge David Dreier with lying to the public about the real reasons for the
occupation of Iraq, as well as committing taxpayer fraud in robbing the
treasury to pay for the war. This is a war for oil and it is costing us
$11-million dollars an hour."
Peace activists were inspired to make a surprise visit to Dreier's office
after witnessing his congressional speech calling for a troop escalation in
Iraq and accusing Democrats who opposed the escalation of betraying the
troops. After picketing Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff's office for
two days, demanding that he vote NO on the next 250-billion dollar Iraq
supplemental appropriation for 2007 and 2008, Winograd and the others drove
a half hour away to the quiet bedroom community of Glendora, where Dreier's
office stands off the highway, not far from several churches.
With the burly aides pushing the activists out the door, a young frail
receptionist insisted, "You must make an appointment. You have to leave
now."
Winograd shot back, "You have to think about leaving this job. Don't throw
away your life working for a war criminal."
Locked out of Dreier's office, Barry with Code Pink used his megaphone to
broadcast to the rest of the building's occupants, "Your congressman and his
staff refuse to discuss peace."
