Some relevant history from my U.S. history:
=20
U.S. companies were not legally targeted at Nuremberg because they were =
on
the=20
winning side. For example, IBM provided logistical and technical support =
for
the=20
Nazi extermination camps in Poland. An IBM punch-card system allowed =
camp=20
administrators to keep track of the doomed inmates. Each tattoo branded =
on=20
millions of arms had a corresponding punch card that had originated as =
part
of a=20
classificatory system invented by IBM=92s founder Herman Hollerith. This =

German-American had gained fame and recognition by automating the U.S.
census in=20
the late 19th century. The death camp punch cards were manufactured =
under
an=20
exclusive IBM patent. Mainstream American media like The New York Times
censored=20
these facts about IBM as well as downplaying the death camps in order to
advance=20
the ambitions of its principal owners and editors=97the Ochs-Sulzberger
dynasty=97to=20
be the United States=92 newspaper of record.[1]
The prior owner, Adolph Ochs whose daughter Iphigene married Arthur Hays
Sulzberger, had adopted a policy of not publishing any letters=20
attacking Nazism before World War II erupted in Europe. Iphigene=92s =
husband=20
continued this policy that accorded with the masthead quote, =93All the =
News=20
That=92s Fit to Print.=94 They did publish articles reporting on Nazi =
policies=20
against Jews. One such article reported that Hitler planned to use =
American=20
Indian reservations as his model for Jewish resettlement. Once the war
began,=20
the paper reported plans for a mixed Polish-Jewish reservation.[2]
Incredibly,=20
Hitler=92s 1925 Mein Kampf with its explicit reference to gassing Jews =
was=20
ignored.=20
Adolph and Arthur were Classical Reform Jews and Anglophiles. They =
believed
that=20
Jews were a religious, rather than an ethnic group. They opposed the
creation of=20
a Jewish state. They regarded =93America as our Zion.=94 They objected =
to
President=20
Roosevelt=92s reference to the =93Jewish race.=94[3] Their p erspective =
put them
at=20
odds with the Zionist Jews who regarded Palestine as the homeland for =
the
Jewish=20
people. They believed that Jews were an ethnic, as well as a religious
group, a race if=20
you will, entitled to the land some of their ancestors had occupied two
thousand=20
years ago when the Romans expelled them from their homeland and they
scattered=20
all over the world. =20
Zionists were not averse to working with the Nazis in order to get Jews =
to=20
settle in Palestine. Both groups shared a belief in lebensraum or living =

space=97land and raw materials=97and adopted notions of racial and =
intellectual=20
superiority over the peoples who occupied the land they coveted. They =
were=20
following in the footsteps of the Manifest Destiny that had allowed =
European

settler to take the land occupied by the indigenous peoples of the =
Western=20
Hemisphere who were essentially exterminated.
When the Nuremberg Laws were enacted in September 1935, Nazis de fended
their=20
value to the Zionist cause. As a result of their enactment, only two =
flags
could=20
now be flown in Germany=97the swastika and the blue-and-white Zionist =
banner.
In 1936, American Jewish Congress founder Stephen Wise despaired:

Hitlerism is Satan=92s nationalism. The determination to rid the German
national=20
body of the Jewish element, however, led Hitlerism to discover its =
=93kinship=94

with Zionism, the Jewish nationalism of liberation. Therefore Zionism =
became
the=20
only other party legalized in the Reich, the Zionist flag the only other
flag=20
permitted to fly in Nazi-land. It was a painful distinction for Zionism =
to
be=20
singled out for favors and privileges by its Satanic counterpart.

Wise and a majority of American Jews supported a boycott of German goods
while=20
Zionists generally opposed it. Both Hitler and Churchill recognized the =
Jews
as=20
a separate race, as did many people at the time.
The boycott movement failed in par t because under Hitler =93German Jews =
could
put=20
money into a bank inside Germany which was then used to buy exports =
which
were=20
then sold outside Germany, usually but not exclusively in Palestine. =
When
the=20
=E9migr=E9s finally arrived in Palestine, they would receive payment for =
the
goods they had previously purchased after they had finally been sold.=94 =

After millions of Jews had been killed and the Israeli state was
established,=20
from Princeton University Albert Einstein wrote a letter in 1948 to The =
New
York=20
Times denouncing Menachem Begin and his Zionist/Heirut Freedom Party as
being=20
=93closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and =
social=20
appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties.=94[4]=20
In 1980, when this author characterized Begin, then Israel=92s Prime =
Minister
and=20
Nobel Peace Prize winner, as =93the Jewish Ayatollah,=94 the feminist =
writer
Betty=20
Freidan ordered him out of her Sag Harbor home. Times change, but =
history=20
exist s to remind us of how the values of the societies in which we live =
are

shaped.
