2005 Green Party candidate for Mayor of New York City, 1996 candidate for
State Assembly, NY War and Peace, U.S. history, race relations,
foreign policy Tony Gronowicz, Ph.D., was the 2005 Green Party candidate
for Mayor of New York City and the 1996 candidate for State Assembly. He
serves on the Green Party of the United States International Committee. A
Manhattan native, Gronowicz graduated from Columbia College and the
University of Pennsylvania where he received a Ph.D. in New York City
political history. He edited Oswald Garrison Villard: The Dilemmas of the
Absolute Pacifist in Two World Wars (1983); and authored Race and Class
Politics in New York City Before the Civil War (1998), and Grand Illusion:
American Democracy From its Roots to the Present (2006). He teaches, U.S.
history, Global Civilization, Political Science and Human Geography at the
City University of New York.
Gronowicz chaired the Chelsea Committee to End the War in Vietnam, attended
the first SDS march on Washington (1965), the Pentagon (1967), Mumia in
Philadelphia with his daughter (2000), and the Diallo City Hall protests. On
June 4, 2001, he was involved in covert direct action at WBAI to end
censorship and restore jobs of fired staff. From 1999 to 2001, he chaired
the University Seminar on the City at Columbia University, and was appointed
to the Speakers' Bureau of the New York Council for the Humanities
(2000-2002) to talk about "The History of Race Relations in New York City."
He is active in his union, the Professional Staff Conference of the City
University of New York, co-editing a union pamphlet, "Globalization,
Privatization, War: In Defense of Public Education in the Americas" (2003).
On December 9, 2003, he publicly testified at City Hall before Councilman
Charles Barron's Committee on Higher Education.
Gronowicz believes that the Greens are capable of building a multiethnic
party grounded in environmental and social justice, and practicing
transparent government, transparently arrived at. In eight WBAI programs in
2000, he discussed his race and class book and how average Americans can
succeed in building a successful third party to defend their interests
against a privately run transnational corporate economy that has downsized
and outsourced full-time American jobs over the last generation, while
spending hundreds of billions of dollars annually waging war all over the
planet.

promising an even-handed
> >approac h . He got loud =
applause for=20
being the first to raise the topic.
> >
> =
>Kucinich=20
proposed a cabinet-level department of peace. Again: applause. =
>=20
>Through out, people are shouting things like "Thank you" that =
sound like=20
> >they come out of frustration with other speeches. =
Kucinich=20
didn't mention
> >"God" as Clinton had, but mentioned =
loving your=20
enemies and basing your
> >policies on that principle, =
which won=20
long applause.
> >
> >Kucinich said we are =
threatened by=20
the twin and linked threats of global
> >warring and =
global=20
warming. Sustainability will bring about peace,
> =
>Kucinich=20
predicted. Government, he said, "has to play a role in
>=20
>recognizing that the economy is part of the environment and not =
the=20
other
> >way around."
> >
> >Kyoto, he =
said,=20
is just a first step.
> >
> >Another path to =
peace is=20
our trade laws, he sa id . One of my first acts in
> =
>office will=20
be to cancel NAFTA and the WTO and base our trade on
>=20
>environmental principles. Kucinich won big applause again for a =
topic=20
that
> >is important to this crowd that has not been =
raised by the=20
other candidates
> >who have spoken here.
> > =
>=20
>Kucinich had to shout out his proposal for a WGA (Works Green =
>=20
>Administration) to be heard through the ongoing applause for his =
> >environmental proposals and their connection to peace. =
>=20
>
> >Then Kucinich turned to health care. He stands for =
HR 676,=20
single-payer,
> >not-for-profit health care. Again: =
enormous=20
applause, this time on an
> >issue that every candidate =
has tried=20
to address. Kucinich said he would
> >challenge the =
private=20
insurance companies (in fact, eliminate them). The
> =
>other=20
candidates, including Clinton who was just here, said they would =
work <B=20
R>> >with the insurance companies to achieve a "consensus". =
>=20
>
> >"I reject the idea that a certain amount of =
unemployment=20
is good for our
> >economy," Kucinich said. "We need a=20
multi-billion dollar investment in our
> >economy every =
year to=20
create jobs."
> >
> >Kucinich said that every =
worker=20
must have the right to organize. Workers
> >rights are =
human=20
rights. He had to shout over the applause. He's on fire
> =
>now.=20
> >
> >We need to break up the monoplies in =
agriculture,=20
in oil, ... It is time
> >for us to stand with the farmers =
of=20
America, breaking up the monopolies.
> >Kucinich is the =
first=20
candidate we've heard speak of farmers.
> >
> =
>Kucinich=20
then turned to another topic that the other candidates have
> =
>avoided: immigrant rights. He pointed out that he'd entered with =
Neil=20
> >Diamond's "Coming to America." K ucin ich said he =
wanted=20
America to again be
> >welcoming of people. The immigrant =
workers=20
are here because NAFTA
> >collapsed wages in Mexico and =
people=20
were desperate, and when they came
> >north we subjected =
them to a=20
system like slave labor. We need to stop
> >blaming the =
victims,=20
Kucinich said. They need a path to citizenship.
> > =
>=20
>In my first week in office, I will send the Justice Dept to =
federal=20
court
> >and seek to overturn the PATRIOT Act. Throw out =
Military=20
Commissions Act.
> >No more illegal spying. LGBT rights. =
Abortions=20
less necessary through
> >health care.
> > =
>=20
>Impeaching Cheney is a defense of the Constitution. We take a =
sacred=20
oath
> >to protect the Constitution. The vice presidency =
and the=20
presidency have
> >to have to have the highest standards. =
I ask=20
every member of congress to
> >join me in holding the vice =
president fi nally accountable. [BIGGEST
> >APPLAUSE YET.] =
> >
> >Kucinich said he would support =
international law,=20
re-sign treaties, and
> >work to abolish all nuclear =
weapons. He=20
would bring the world back
> >together with America. A =
nation at=20
peace with full employment, health care
> >and education =
and civil=20
liberties and love for all. This is a new America.
> > =
Let's call=20
it forward. America. America. America.
> >
> =
>They=20
cranked up Neil Diamond again to be heard over the long loud =
applause.=20
>
>
> =
