just getting back on line now, and getting my "toes wet" (i'm a slow

Life's been beyond crazy and i've had 'puter issues as well, sorry i've been
gone so long and didn't give anyone a real head's up that this was
happening, kept thinking, "tomorrow i can have this all straightened out"

Mary Donnelly, a 68-year-old grandmother from Peaks Island, knows her place.

Donnelly is one of 13 peace activists who were arrested on Wednesday in U.S.
Rep. Tom Allen's Portland office, trying to push a consistently anti-war
politician to take a stronger anti-war stance.
When they were taken to the Cumberland County Jail, Donnelly was one of four
protesters who refused to pay a $40 bail commissioner's fee and accept
release on an unsecured bond. Instead, she'll spend at least two nights in
jail, before a scheduled appearance today in Portland District Court.
"I think this war is wrong and we've come to a crossroads in support for
President Bush and in funding for the war," she said in an interview on
Thursday. "Without the funding, the war cannot continue. Congress has been
wishy-washy."
Allen, a Democrat, voted against authorizing the war in 2003, and has
proposed legislation that would remove authorization for it now and begin
the process of redeploying troops. But he has been targeted for protests
because he has refused to rule out casting a vote in favor of a supplemental
appropriation requested by Bush to pay for a surge of 20,000 additional
troops into Iraq.
Allen is not ready to commit to a vote against the bill, his spokesman said.
"As adamantly as he opposed the war, he is not going to leave men and women
in harm's way without the resources they need," said Mark Sullivan, Allen's
communications director.
Allen plans to wait until after the bill is written to take a position,
Sullivan said.
Maine's other congressman, Rep. Michael Michaud, also a Democrat, has
already announced his intention to vote against war funding.
Other protests are planned for Allen's office before the measure comes up
for a vote in the House of Representatives early next month, said Danny
Muller, executive director of Peace Action Maine.
On Wednesday, Portland police arrested Donnelly and 12 others: Susan
Anderson, 38, of Portland; Stephen Carroll, 43, of Portland; Kathe Chipman,
62, of Harpswell; Carolyn Coe, 40, of Blue Hill; Christine DeTroy, 78, of
Brunswick; Bruce Gagnon, 54, of Bath; Mair Honan, 58, of Portland; Dexter
Kamilewicz, 62, of Orrs Island; Natasha Mayers, 60, of Whitefield; Mary Beth
Sullivan, 52, of Bath; Karen Wainberg, 63, of Bath; and Whonda Wilson, 57,
of Portland.
Donnelly, Coe, Gagnon and Sullivan refused bail and remained in jail until
their arraignments. They were all charged with criminal threatening, which
carries a penalty of as much as six months in jail.
Donnelly said the four remaining protesters do not believe they did anything
wrong and should not have to pay anything to the system.
She said they will all plead not guilty when they come before a judge and
will request a trial.
Donnelly, a retired elementary school teacher, said she was not active in
the anti-Vietnam War movement in the 1960s because she was raising five
children. But she became interested in women's rights, health care and
poverty issues in the 1980s, and they led her into peace activism.
She and her husband, Mike, protested the 1991 Persian Gulf War and visited
Iraq in 1998 to learn about the consequences of international sanctions
enforced by the threat of U.S. military power.
Since then, she said, she has seen small pockets of protest to the current
war grow into broad public opposition -- including among inmates she has met
in the Cumberland County Jail.
"I don't think you would have seen that in 2003," she said. "It feels like
the tide has changed."
