The party should endorse all the details of Michael's call.

Dear Peacemakers:
I would propose that any Green Party statement that speaks to "shutting down Guantanamo" should call not only for the shutdown of " Camp Delta" and the other illegal detention facilities, but also for the shutdown of the U.S. NAVAL BASE, which is being occupied by force against the will of the host country. This base is located near the southeastern tip of the island and covers over 45 square miles of Cuban territory, including both sides of the entrance to Guantanamo Bay, which is considered the finest deep water port in the Caribbean. The U.S. claims the right to "lease" this base from Cuba in perpetuity under a bogus agreement signed in the 1930's, but since 1959 Cuba has not cashed the $4,000 annual rent checks and does not recognize the legality of the lease. For almost 50 years, Cuba has been requesting the return of their national territory to Cuba. It is indeed time to SHUT DOWN GUANTANAMO.

Dear Jacqui,
Witness Against Torture, a member group of UFPJ, has been a leading force in the efforts to shut down the detention center at Guantánamo. Now they are organizing what promises to be an important day of protest on Friday, January 11, 2008. More information about the plans for activities in Washington, DC, that day -- as well as what you can do locally -- are included in the message below.
Peace,
Leslie Cagan
National Coordinator, UFPJ
