Why are Democrats Blocking Bush=E2=80=99s Impeachment?=20
The Democratic leaders in Congress are doing their best to prevent the =20
impeachment of President Bush, sending Cong. Kucinich=E2=80=99s resolution t=
o die in =20
committee.=20
Impeachment is important to restore the rule of law in America.=20
Impeachment is a multi-step process. The first step is for the House to =20
determine that there is enough evidence of possible wrongdoing to warrant a=20=
=20
trial. Once the House agrees, the matter is sent to the Senate to hold a hea=
ring =20
and to provide the accused an opportunity to explain his actions. Only after=
=20
the trial would the Senate vote on the question of guilt.=20
If the House thought that Pres. Clinton=E2=80=99s evasive definition of what=
=20
constitutes sex was worthy of indictment, it is hard to understand how the=20=
=20
misleading statements made by President Bush and VP Cheney over launching a=20=
war isn=E2=80=99t=20
impeachable.=20
Since the Democrats resumed control of Congress last year, the Democratic =20
leadership has argued that impeaching Bush and Cheney would increase the =20
partisan warfare in Congress, possibly leading to voter backlash that someho=
w might=20
jeopardize their election chances this year. Yet partisanship in Congress=20
still prevails without impeachment. =20
Others point out that the Democrats were complicit in various actions by th=
e=20
Bush administration that led us to war and a curtailment of civil liberties=20=
=20
and thus would prefer to avoid exposing their own behavior. =20
Far more important than the Democrat=E2=80=99s election strategies is the ve=
ry real=20
question as to whether our political leaders are willing to stand up and =20
reassert the power of the federal Constitution and the rule of law. =20
As Cong. Kucinich has stated, without re-establishing the rule of law, we =20=
=E2=80=9C
would let the next president know that he could go ahead and wage war withou=
t =20
congressional approval. That he could approve of wiretapping, rendition,=20
spying, torture or anything because congress wouldn't act. We need to take=20=
a stand=20
now not just for justice for what's happened over the last six, seven years=
=20
but also to restrain any abuse of power in the next administration." The=20
impeachment charges also addresses Bush=E2=80=99s suppression of the scient=
ific evidence=20
of climate change and the mishandling of the response to Katrina.=20
As tragic as 9/11 was, it will become an even greater tragedy if we allow =20
the Bush administration and Congress to succeed in using it as an excuse to=20=
bury=20
the Constitution. Democracy can not exist if our leaders are not held =20
accountable for their misdeeds. =20
