This would make 5 of the last 7 days I would have had Green or Peace events. In these times when we need to be on the street and recruiting new people to longer terms of activity in the movement and the GP, I just cannot face getting going at 6am after _starting_ a meeting at=20 10pm.
I feel sure that there are real reasons for having it at that time, but I cannot make it.

The USGP Peace Action Committee (GPax) thanks everyone who has shared ideas for Green Party Days of Coordinated Actions! We want to do our first Day of Actions on Tax Day, Tuesday, April 15. The goal is for Greens to take local actions nationwide around a Tax Day theme. Here is the general message that we are calling actions around: Taxpayers dollars are not being used for much-needed human services (especially education and health care), because corporate military contracts are robbing Uncle Sam's bank to pay for the war on Iraq. We encourage the use of any of the 10 key values to hammer home the point. This is the working theme, and we will be honing the message and providing you with materials this week. We are suggesting that all actions should in some way link budget deficits, the sagging economy and lack of human services domestically (especially education and health care) with the costs of war. Of course, if you choose to participate, your local area, culture and values will determine how and what you do on tax day. The idea isn't for every Green Party local to do the same kind of action, just for us to do it on the same day, getting out the same general message. We've included a few ideas, below, for what your local could do, however, we encourage everyone to be creative and do what works best for your group. We also encourage your feedback, comments and suggestions in helping us get this message out. The Peace Action Committee will provide resources, such as pamphlets, as well as media outreach, and web site maintenance. We will also strive to facilitate networking, although since the timeline is short and this is our initial action, we know we will get better at this over time. We have a peace action listserve for Greens who want to work on this and future coordinated peace and justice actions. Just let us know if you want to be on it. To facilitate coordination, we are suggesting that each state and caucus designate one person from each state and caucus who will act as a liaison to the Greens in their state. This GPax coordinator would make sure that all locals and relevant state entities, as well as caucus structures receive relevant information. The GPax coordinator would also be the conduit for ideas to the rest of the states, via the listserve. Again, the listserve is not limited to coordinators, but the coordinator would be responsible for making sure the listserve is monitored and information disseminated to all relevant state, local and caucus entities in a timely manner. That person can also have an alternate, to help during periods when the regular GPax coordinator is not able to be the communications link for your state or caucus. Please communicate your status as a peace action coordinator to Heron at bonner@idahogreenparty.org. We are working on a flyer that will highlight all the issues and give information about the Green Party as the Party of Peace. We'll leave a space for you to include your local contact info. We'll let everyone know when it's on the Peace Page at http://www.gp.org/peace.html so you can download it, print it out and distribute it at your Local Action. IMPORTANT: Please Register your Action on the Green Party Peace Page at http://www.gp.org/peace_local.html so we all know what each other is doing and so people can search for their town and find the details of their local action. Checking this page is also a way to get quick ideas for your own project without having to reinvent the wheel. Ideas for Actions: Organize a TAX DAY Action at your local post office on April 15. Sidewalks on government buildings are public property but these days you may have to get a permit and agree to not interfere with anyone doing business at the post office. You can notify your local media of your TAX DAY action. Organize a TAX DAY Town Meeting or Forum, with an open mike. Let people discuss how cost of war impacts human services. Bring in knowledgeable speakers. Organize a DEATH AND TAXES Demo at your local weapons manufacturing factory, headquarters or the CEO or Board Members' homes. Organize a Symbolic "SHREDDING PARTY" -- a reverse Enron, where people shred copies of their tax returns. Print out and make copies of the Deception Dollar and pass them out at your action: www.sigacanada.com/frontpage/politicalart/deceptiondollar/ deceptiondollarwithsites.htm Green Party "Peace Party" Buttons are available from the national Green Party office. Go to: http://www.gp.org/products.html The Green Party Peace Action Committee meets every other Thursday at 7pm PT, 10pm ET for one hour. Our next meeting is April 10. And I have two ideas for Green Party actions. Prominent as I drove across Northern Italy were the rainbow peace ("pace") flags hanging from balconies. It was a gorgeous, gorgeous site. Then in yesterday's anti-war rally on the Boston Common, these flags were for sale, and I bought one, and tons of people asked me with excitement where I got one. Italy started a "peace from every balcony" campaign http://www.bandieredipace.org/ and it looks like it's working. Almost every single apartment building had at least one balcony with a peace flag. Anyways I hung my flag from my window and it felt very empowering... We should start a Peace From Every Balcony campaign here, and make these flags available (I haven't been able to find the company selling them). Also, I bought a blue flag with a white peace symbol for my car antenna, and riding with this on today also felt empowering. And it felt like a bold counter-attack to the SUV-selecting-American-flagitus. Second, there's a wonderful piece in CommonDreams, from Bill C. Davis (http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0330-09.htm) where he has the idea to "embed" reporters in the peace movement. I think the Greens should formally and publicly invite reporters to join our actions on April 15th as embedded reporters. It would help make the points that a)they are missing the major points being made by the peace movement and b)the embedded reporters in the gulf aren't exactly providing objective news coverage. Also, I don't know who updates the peace page on gp.org, but it should link to www.greenrainbow.org/Cost_of_War/ by Rudy Perkins Peace, Eli From starlene@greens.org Mon Mar 31 18:01:39 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: usgp-mx-peace@gp-us.org Received: (qmail 10936 invoked by uid 0); 31 Mar 2003 18:01:39 -0000 Received: from mta7.pltn13.pbi.net (64.164.98.8) by cesarchavez.cagreens.org with SMTP; 31 Mar 2003 18:01:39 -0000 Received: from Starlene (adsl-63-204-74-249.dsl.scrm01.pacbell.net [63.204.74.249]) by mta7.pltn13.pbi.net (8.12.3 patch/8.12.3) with ESMTP id h2VI0jHo028290 for ; Mon, 31 Mar 2003 10:00:46 -0800 (PST) From: "Starlene Rankin" To: peace@gp-us.org Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 10:00:34 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 Reply-to: starlene@greens.org Message-ID: <3E8811C2.26415.8D3E66@localhost> Priority: normal X-mailer: Pegasus Mail for Windows (v4.02) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-description: Mail message body Subject: [GPPeace] Call for April 4-7 Actions Sender: peace-admin@lists.gp-us.org Errors-To: peace-admin@lists.gp-us.org X-BeenThere: peace@lists.gp-us.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.8 Precedence: bulk List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: GP-US peace list List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: HONOR THE LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.: STOP THE WAR NOW! A call for nationally coordinated local actions April 4 through7. www.unitedforpeace.org Washington's war hawks are loose. They are piteously bombarding Iraq in an unprovoked, illegal and immoral attack. They are ignoring the plight of people at home and spending billions of dollars on killing people who have never threatened our country. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was our country's foremost spokesperson for peace and justice. He understood how immoral war abroad meant racism and injustice at home. For this he was vilified and eventually assassinated on April 4, 1968. (A year earlier, on April 4, 1967, Dr. King had delivered a major speech against the war in Vietnam.) >From April 4 to7 of this year, in commemoration of the death of Dr. King and in celebration of his legacy, United for Peace and Justice calls for nationally coordinated local antiwar actions to be organized throughout the country. We issue this call in cooperation with the Campus Anti-War Network, Citizen Works and Direct Action to Stop the War, which are all organizing nationwide protests during the same period. We demand an immediate cease fire and withdrawal of the troops from Iraq. We link the cause of peace abroad with the cause of justice at home. We must keep the pressure on the Bush Administration because of its rogue interaction in the world community, its ignoring of international public opinion, and disregard for the international diplomatic community in the UN. The war against Iraq takes valuable resources away from affordable housing, health care, and quality education: as Iraqis are killed our communities at home are maimed and damaged. Our actions will run the full gamut of possibilities: educational events, vigils, marches, rallies, lobbying, non-violent civil disobedience, and other ways for large numbers of people to express their opposition to this war. We must stop the war NOW in order to save as many lives as possible. We must stop the war NOW so we can prioritize education, jobs and economic recovery instead of militarism, destruction and loss of civil liberties. We must stop the war NOW in order to restore sanity to international relations. UFPJ urges you to list your activities on our web site. We will work with the media to get coverage of these four days, projecting it as the next major outpouring of public opposition to the war in Iraq. Our web site also offers links to other groups around the country and resources that may help in organizing your actions: www.unitedforpeace.org. Call our national office at 212-603-3700 for more information. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ACTION CALENDAR...all supported by United for Peace and Justice April 4th: UFPJ calls for activities at schools, in workplaces and in our communities that highlight the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by linking our work for peace to the struggle for economic and social justice: marches, rallies, educational events, vigils, and mass leafleting. April 5th: (a) Citizen Works calls for teach-ins, rallies, protests, parades, and other events as part of this year's Big Business Day. Under the theme of Challenging the Business of War, these activities will ask who pays and who benefits from this war? For more information, see www.citizenworks.org. (b) Campus Anti-War Network is organizing a Festival of Peace in Washington, DC and demonstrations in Chicago and San Francisco under the theme of "no war at home and abroad." For more information, see www.antiwarnetwork.org. April 6th: Local educational and protest activities linking the cost of this war to the cuts in housing, health care, environmental clean-up, mass transit, veterans benefits and other critical programs. Sermons and discussions at churches. April 7th: Direct Action to Stop the War (SF/Bay Area) calls for a National Day of Direct Action and Civil Disobedience to Stop the War at Home and Abroad with non-cooperation targeting federal and government buildings, oil corporations, arms manufacturers and arms transportation systems. Instead of going to work or school, sustain the resistance to this war by participating in or supporting mass nonviolent direct action. For more information and resources, see www.actagainstwar.org. Looking ahead, UFPJ supports the activities being organized by the Latin American Solidarity Coalition from April 10th to 15th in Washington, DC. In addition to a major national conference, LASC is organizing a march and rally on April 13th and two days of Congressional lobbying on April 14th and 15th. Stories of a few: http://epic-usa.org/pressroom/news.php?n=3D02 Also from another website, another good idea: **Austin, TX =96 A group of 7 =93peace recruiters=94 were arrested for criminal trespass when they set up a Peace Recruitment Table in the doorway to an army recruiting center in a mall on the University of Texas Austin campus. A brief rally and speak out was followed by a march, and the peace recruiters were able to conduct their business for almost two hours before being arrested, gathering 100 new Pledge signatures and covering the windows of the recruiting center with signs reading =93Sign up for Peace Here=94 and =93Closed for War, Open for Peace.=94 The arrestees were treated well by police, who released them within two hours, and they have been charged (somewhat surprisingly and severely) with a Class B misdemeanor or criminal trespass, with a maximum fine of $2000 or six months in prison. (There case should develop in April or March, and we will keep you updated.) In addition, anti-war banners were hung on 11 downtown bridges, staying up for several hours, and a massive human billboard was held on the main downtown bridge at 5pm. Kayly S.
