[Now they're no longer mining coal or working at the plant, since
everything is made in China. After they get off working as clerks or
from working at the computer in cubicles, they come home from long
commutes and start watching TV or surfing the internet. -- Roger]

January's out. So is February, March, April and most of May, too.

More than a third of next year will be taken up watching television,
reading newspapers, surfing the Internet and listening to music,
according to census data released today.

The U.S. Census Bureau's Statistical Abstract of the United States
forecasts adults and teens will spend 3,518 hours - that's nearly
five months - consuming media in some format in 2007.

In total, each American will spend $936.75 on media in 2007, up from
$608.31 in 2000 and rising to $1,023.69 in 2009, according to the data.

Time spent surfing the Internet is expected to double in a 10-year
period, jumping from 104 hours per person in 2000 to 203 in 2009....

On average, $81.49 per person was spent on videos and DVDs in 2000,
compared with $151.09 this year.

The report also projects that U.S. consumers were likely to spend
$55.5 billion to purchase 3.17 billion books in 2007.
