I can see the different views on this subject matter as it relates to the park
service. I think the root problem or fallacy of the overall matter lies in the
patenting of living organisms or their functions and or services, and demanding
royalities as if man somehow is responsible for the benevolence of creation just
because they slightly altered it. It's bad enough that we take, take, take from
shared lands and waters, ecosystems, and the future, leaving little behind. As
if that were not enough, we have to take credit and claim to the miracle of life
itself. The act is egregious, atrocious, and grotesque.

As the article states: "If the Park Service gets its way,
corporations will be allowed to mine, exploit, patent, and profit from
living organisms that we are supposed to be stewarding."
Stewardship is not the same as isolation. It implies that is looked after
and put to the best possible use. If there are micro-organisms that have
medical or commerical benefit - stewardship would imply that the
prospector should pay licensing fees to the public sector for its use.
Another advantage to using micro-organisms is that you can get a
sample and them have them reproduce in the lab, thus avoiding the
need to "strip mine" for them in the wild. (Another reason why this
type of venture should be encrouraged, rather than walled off.)
This is a public asset, stewardship means that *provided it can be
done in a sustainable manner* limited commercial use should be
approved. Fortunately, germs grow back thousands of times faster
than old growth forests.
