<P><BR><BR></P>There is the important point made in the alternative contrasts, that opening the door to commercial exploitation with little or no oversight probably, will allow all kinds of activities under the guise of 'research'.&nbsp;&nbsp; One must also ask why these commercial interests can not locate suitable areas privately owned where they can negotiate access and sample gathering, or other research ideas that they assert are beneficial in aim to the general good. </DIV>&nbsp;&nbsp; Privatization of the public land usage, is something that has many potential pitfalls, and risks. If allowed the companies should at the very least be required to post aa no-harm bond, and open access to all their activities, and severe penalties for violations, up to and including loss of all their assets to pay for any of the damage done. This puts a barrier very high and should discourage such ventures.
<DIV></DIV>Personally i prefer keeping the public lands safe from the commercial interests.

<DIV></DIV>Perhaps this is "un-Green" of me, but I don't see why option B is not better than option C.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>As the article states: "If the Park Service gets its way,
<DIV></DIV>corporations will be allowed to mine, exploit, patent, and profit from
<DIV></DIV>living organisms that we are supposed to be stewarding."
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>Stewardship is not the same as isolation. It implies that is looked after
<DIV></DIV>and put to the best possible use. If there are micro-organisms that have
<DIV></DIV>medical or commercial benefit - stewardship would imply that the
<DIV></DIV>prospector should pay licensing fees to the public sector for its use.
<DIV></DIV>Another advantage to using micro-organisms is that you can get a
<DIV></DIV>sample and them have them reproduce in the lab, thus avoiding the
<DIV></DIV>need to "strip mine" for them in the wild. (Another reason why this
<DIV></DIV>type of venture should be encouraged, rather than walled off.)
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>This is a public asset, stewardship means that *provided it can be
<DIV></DIV>done in a sustainable manner* limited commercial use should be
<DIV></DIV>approved. Fortunately, germs grow back thousands of times faster
<DIV></DIV>than old growth forests.
