Demand that Congress pass real ethics reform.
No matter what cause you care most about in the world today, your biggest
obstacle has to be a Congress that listens to big money contributions instead of
the citizens they represent. The legal way to reform is difficult because the
law is currently not ethical. Laws and actions are currently doled out by a
corrupt legislative system. The general public wants what we want. They want
the environmental and social causes to be improved and protected. Poll after
poll supports consumer and habitat protections. So why does the federal
government not listen? The answer to this is the very reason why the 110th
Congress passing substantial ethics and lobby reform should be the number 1
priority of every social, environmental, non-profit, consumer advocate group in
the country. Every single one of our voices gets that much louder when the
corruption on capitol hill is ratcheted down. Positive change will become much
easier when we can compete with rich special interests and lobbyists. Help
bring about significant change.
This opportunity does not come up often. Make this a priority in your
organization, and get the word out. It will set the tone for the rest of the
year.

Much of this legislation will be debated next week (Jan 8th-12th). Senate Bill
1 is currently weak. The House Bill is better. But both need an independent
committee to monitor lobbyist and members of Congress. Bans on gifts, travel,
and earmarks would be weak without some form of enforcement and review. When
you talk to your representatives, an independent Office of Public Integrity to
enforce compliance of the new rules among lobbyists and Congress is crucial.
Thank you for your attention and priority to this matter. We can gripe all
year, but right now it's time to act. We do not get this opportunity very
often.
