http://www.times-standard.com/opinion/ci_5083560=0A=0AHere's an editorial D=
avid Cobb wrote for his local newspaper that appeared today:=0A=0ALast week=
the Eureka Federation of Republican Women hosted a hate-fest against susta=
inability in general, and the Green Party specifically. The local Republica=
ns hosted right-wing fanatic Holly Swanson, who is traveling across the cou=
ntry warning of the dangers of environmentalism. =0AApproximately 60 folks =
attended to hear a diatribe that included an allegation that the Green Part=
y was engaged in a concerted effort to =93brainwash=94 children to respect =
the earth. Swanson went so far as to accuse the Greens of being just like t=
he Nazi Party of fascistGermany. =0AShe received a standing ovation at the =
conclusion of her tirade. =0AAnd if that isn't scary enough, Julie Williams=
assured Swanson that the North Coast Association of Home Builders shared h=
er sentiments. =0AThis sort of nonsense would be funny if we were not livin=
g in such scary and dangerous times. Consider that George Bush--considered =
by many to be the worst environmental President in U.S. history--has admitt=
ed that the United States has an oil addiction, and that global climate cha=
nge is real. (I am still waiting for him to admit that he lied about weapon=
s of mass destruction and that he actually launched the war to secure the o=
il fields of Iraq.)=0ATo set the record straight, the Green Party is the el=
ectoral arm of a growing worldwide movement for peace, social justice, ecol=
ogy, and grassroots democracy. There are over 150,000 registered Greens in =
California alone, and over 500,000 Greens in the United States. Despite dra=
conian laws that make it difficult for any alternative political party to a=
ppear on many state ballots or participate in political debates in this cou=
ntry, Greens are running for office across the country. And we often win. =
=0AThe Green Party is getting larger, stronger and better organized with ev=
ery election cycle. In large part that growth is attributable to the fact t=
hat Greens refuse to solicit or accept corporate money. Our support of the =
earth also helps our popularity. =0AI am also proud to report that 2004 Nob=
el Peace Prize Winner Professor Wangari Maathai is a member of the Green Pa=
rty, helping to found the Green Belt Movement and the Green Party in her na=
tive Kenya. (The corporate media has virtually ignored this important part =
of Professor Maathai's biography). =0AIt is worth remembering that alternat=
ive political parties have been responsible for some of the most significan=
t reforms in American history. Third parties advocated for the abolition of=
slavery, the forty-hour workweek, women's suffrage, the creation of the So=
cial Security System, worker's compensation laws, pure food and drug laws, =
and the end of child labor. =0AThird parties have always been the voice of =
the people, especially during times when great changes are needed. So if yo=
u want a U.S. foreign policy based on human rights, if you want oppose the =
war in Iraq, if you support a living wage, if you want universal health car=
e for all, please consider registering to vote as a member of the Green Par=
ty. =0AAs a registered Green, you vote for peace, social justice, sustainab=
ility and grassroots democracy every single day. How? Because your registra=
tion sends a powerful message to elected officials, to the media, and to th=
e entire the world that you are committed to a fundamental transformation o=
f how our government and our society operates. =0AIf you would like to lear=
n more, visit the local Green party website at www.humboldtgreens.org =0AOr=
join us at the upcoming General Assembly of the Green Party of Humboldt Co=
unty on February 10th 11:00am at Humboldt State University in Nelson Hall E=
ast room 113. =0AThe General Assembly is the highest authority of the Humbo=
ldt Green Party, and provides an open forum where Green Party members can c=
ome together to set priorities, goals, and strategies. =0AAnd we promise no=
t eat you or your children. =0ADavid Cobb was the Green Party candidate for=
President in 2004 and currently works for Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt =
County. He can be reached at david@duhc.org or 269-0984.=0A=0A=0A =0A______=
