Actually, it was just two new books I started to mention the other night...one that just came out last week, and one that's been out a couple of months, both are interconnected.

A few years back, I sent this post ( bottom ) about an article in Utne about a new book by John Perkins, "Confessions of an Economic Hitman". At the time, it seemed like Utne was charging for articles, but if you click on that link at the very bottom, you actually can get the article now.

Anyway, I liked the book and I wasn't alone as it turned out to a NY Times list best seller for quite a long time, over a year. It wasn't without it's critics, some who criticize his writing, others who question his timing of being involved as an "economic hit man" for as long as he was ( pretty much the ' 70s ) and just now coming out with the book ( a few years ago ). His memoir can seem a bit full of itself at times, but I buy his sincere efforts in the last 25 years or so in trying to reverse/expose much of this. It at times read like an espionage novel but that's never a problem for me. ( I again really recommend Hal Hartley's new espionage/terrorist spoof, "Fay Grim". Very clever!! ) Anyway, as self-indulgent as "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" occasionally might come off as, it was still entertaining and I presume highly informative to all these other people who might not be aware what the World Bank, IMF, etc have been doing all these years. And if
people like Howard Zinn, Greg Palast and Amy Goodman endorse him, I'll take their word over his critics, who might have personal reasons for the slams.

Perkin's new one, "The Secret History Of The American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals And The Truth About Global Corruption" came out last week, and it goes further in depth about what/where he covered in his memoir without so much of his life story interspersed in. Well, sorta.

He wrote the forward to "A Game As Old As Empire:The Secret World Of Economic Hit Men And The Web Of Global Corruption", edited by Steven Hiatt. It has accounts by other EHMs, journalists and investigators. With chapters like "The human cost of cheap cell phones" and "Hijacking Iraq's oil reserves:economic hit men at work", it looks like a good read. In fact, I very much recommend all three...

Good article in the current Jan/Feb Utne ( "Take Your Time" flying snail on cover ). It's about a new book written by John Perkins, a former World Bank/IMF insider, in the manor of other such insider confessionals like Joseph Stiglitz and Jeffrey Sachs. "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" details how Perkins initially assumed he was assisting Third World countries on a path toward economic security, modernization and democracy by funneling international development loans their way. When the ugly truth began to clearly reveal itself in so many diverse, tragic ways, he was there to take extensive notes. Just from this article, it sounds like he has some wild, cloak and dagger tales to share. All kinds of nutty CIA sponsored assassination plots and such. Sounds like a good book.

Utne's online site unfortunately charges $2.95 for articles, so go buy the current mag, I guess. Here's the link anyway...
