The House State Affairs committee last night voted to send Zedler's HB 159 to the Calendars Committee.&nbsp; Anybody out there from DFW area?&nbsp; Bill Zedler (512) 463-0374, (Fax 512-463-0364)&nbsp; represents Arlington, like UT Arlington? &nbsp;HB 159 simply deletes from the statute all the language relative to undocumented students, no grandfather provision for those now enrolled in college and no consideration for those students who have filed for permanent residency and are awaiting approval. &nbsp;Everybody's out, no more college for some of the smartest high school graduates in the state. &nbsp;

PLEASE MAKE KNOWN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE YOUR OPPOSITION TO HB 159 and ANY LEGISLATION THAT WOULD DENY ALL STUDENTS IN TEXAS THE OPPORTUNITY OF AN AFFORDABLE COLLEGE EDUCATION. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Texans do not punish children for what their parents do, we honor family values.&nbsp; Ask the committee to please vote NO to putting HB 159 on the Calendar.&nbsp; Congress is very close to passing immigration reform which will allow these students to become citizens and Texas will be leading the nation in producing an educated workforce of teachers, engineers, doctors, lawyers, social workers, business entrepreneurs and nurses.&nbsp; 

In addition to making known your opposition, please ask others you know who are supportive to do the same.&nbsp; IT MATTERS, and cards and letters are counted.&nbsp;

FYI, I was blown away last week in committee when it was stated that well over half the undocumented students enrolled at UT-Austin (74%) and at A &amp; M Univ-College Station (52.2%) were in the top 10% of their class. &nbsp;I think those numbers won't hold up statewide at every institution but a preliminary look at numbers sent by the Coordinating Board indicates to me that at least 25% of the Fall 2006 statewide enrollment under 1403/1528 were in the top 10%.&nbsp;
