It makes me sick that we live in a world where something as retarded as Larry the Cable Guy's brain dead idea of humor, "Delta Farce" is probably going to play for months and make multi-millions, while something as deliriously intelligent as "Fay Grim" will only last a week. In fact, everyone here, whether they're into Hal Hartley or not, ought to feel shame about this twisted cinema Darwinism that constantly rewards dumb ass hack work over thoughtful brilliance. I know, nobody has to explain to me the business of box office, but it's just appalling what sells big time and what gems go mostly unnoticed.
In fact, that's the inexplicable slam on this movie...that it's too intelligent, too complex. Amazing! And again, Larry the Cable Guy is probably going to make a fortune. As far as I'm concerned, Hal Hartley is back after the somewhat disappointing misstep of his "fake sci-fi" feature, "The Girl From Monday". I'm now thinking I should give that a second chance.
You gotta give him credit for coming up with a dazzlingly clever idea for a sequel...in the first movie, "Henry Fool", you just assume the intellectual drifter Henry was just talking bullshit when he refers to his soon to be finished "confession" as something that will "blow a hole right in the world's own idea of itself" and other such laughably over the top hyperbolic assertions. Well it's now revealed that Henry was actually a globetrotting CIA operative in exile, and his multi-part confessions are most likely a coded study in various government atrocities.
Damn clever!!!! And yet "Delta Farce" is what passes for comedy today. I'm sorry, I just can't stop obsessing over this. Anyway the critics are split down the middle on "Fay Grim". About half really liked it, while others though never saying it's bad, just way too convoluted and complicated. Ebert is a good example of a generally thoughtful, savvy movie critic who for the life of him just does not get Hartley even though he trys. In fact, in his new "Your Movie Sucked" collection of negative reviews, he includes his pan of Hartley's inspired monster movie, "No Such Thing".
Ebert will point out things that don't make sense, and that's totally missing the point of Hartley movies as the great majority of them are almost complete nonsense, yet inspired, creative nonsense done in such a subtle, deadpan way where it comes off very weird. The bizarre choreography and body language. The always beautiful score that Hartley always composes/plays. And especially the totally loopy dialog that's delivered in such a straight faced manner. But much of the humor is so buried in the mix to where's it's almost subliminal...you never "get it" the first time. I saw "Fay Grim" twice, a couple of months ago at the AFI film fest and this past weekend. The first time, I thought it was a fun follow up to "Henry Fool", but if I had any mild criticism, it was that the first one was so rich in multi-themes and at least a dozen mini plots, this new one was rather one note with it's main focus on international espionage. A serio-comic "Syriana". Seeing it a
second time reveals more layers.
As I say, with this, Hartley is back, and what is so painful in seeing his movies fail to crack wider then his knowing adoring cult, is that it will get harder and harder for him to constantly make them on a regular yearly basis as he somehow was able to do in the first half of the ' 90s. And it's also one of these Cuban/Wagner things that are simultaneously released in the theaters, the HDnet TV channel and DVD at the same time. So I'm not sure how much that cuts into the big screen market.
Has anyone else bothered to see this? Even those who saw/liked "Henry Fool"? For those who haven't, it might almost be more fun to see "Fay Grim" first and then go back and see "Henry Fool" for the roots of the main charaters. Robert, forget about Box Office Mojo and Rotten Tomatoes and just take a chance on this incredible double feature!! "Henry Fool' alone is one of the greatest movies ever, and you always get something new no matter how many times you see it. Epic magnifigance!! I talked to someone who hadn't seen it in some time. He saw it again in anticipation of "Fay Grim" and was in tears at the end.

Also the "Fay Grim" site that includes the trailer. And a link to the "Henry Fool" and "Simple Men" trailers. Lot's of YouTube complimentary clips to the right of each like Henry Fool gives grammar lessons and the Sonic Youth dance party. Looking for Dad, Hot f---ing Tuna, Protection?, etc.
You have 2 more days to see it on the big screen as it's unfortunately leaving the Magnolia after Thursday *sigh*...
