I've got mixed feelings about Todd Haynes..."Far From Heaven", his dead on perfect homage of those ' 50s "weepie" melodramas was my favorite movie of 2002, and really one of my favorites so far of the whole decade. I'm still stunned at just how great an artistic achievement that movie was, and the late Elmer Bernstein's fitting ' 50s style score was the cherry on top.
His ' 70s glam-rock tribute, "Velvet Goldmine" was interesting and true to the period. Love the Roxy Music/Eno songs he used in that. Everyone thought "Safe" was one of the best indie movies of the ' 90s, but I totally didn't connect with it. And I never saw the Karen Carpenter thing made with Barbie dolls. Anyway this strange looking new movie is not so much a biopic, but a study of Dylan's life/career with 7 actors portraying different phases of his life, but not as Dylan...just stereotypes of his changes. Cate Blanchett's uncanny portrayal of the 1966 era sullen, rebellious Dylan is so right on the money, it makes you want pull out "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blond On Blond".
Much like I feel about the Rolling Stones and Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention, I loved most everything Bob Dylan did in the ' 60s, but I didn't care for but a few songs he did in the ' 70s, and virtually nothing afterwards. His newly electric, surreal folk-rock mid-' 60s period is of course the peak, as well as his protest folk singer period circa: 62/ 63.
"Talking John Birch Paranoid Blues" is one of my favorites from that period. It perfectly lampoons the rabid cold war era fear the hard right of the day had for communists. There's a great legend to this song, that was controversial in many ways. It was supposed to go on his second album. "The Freewheeling Bob Dylan", but got pulled cause Columbia's lawyers feared it would trigger libel suits with lyrics that said members of the John Birch Society subscribed to "Hitler's views". As nutty as many of them no doubt were, they probably did. So the equally wonderful "Talking World War 3 Blues" went on the album instead.
But it didn't end there...he was set to play it on the Ed Sullivan show the 12th of May, 1963. Sullivan thought it was hilarious, but one of the CBS censors chickened out and suggested he play something else. Dylan stormed out in protest and refused to play anything. What a shame this didn't happen cause it would've been one of the true legendary moments in television history.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. You look back at the John Birchers way back then and smile at their overzealous fear, but this same, exact mentality of terrorism is all around us today. Live versions of this song ended up on a couple of Dylan's archival bootleg series. Lyrics below....

This song ( "It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding" ) is the one that made me finally understand Dylan after years of resisting him. It's the one that finally made me "get" Dylan, and I hope it's used in the film.

When you asked how I was doing, was that some kind of joke?
