Swedish Greens seek to bar Left Party from future Social Democrat coalition
  October 09, 2007: 04:38 AM EST

STOCKHOLM, Oct. 9, 2007 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- The leader of the Green Party Peter Eriksson said his former coalition partners, the Left Party, should be excluded from any future coalition with the Social Democrats, reported Svenska Dagbladet.

Eriksson's stance marks a sharp break with the past as the three parties traditionally form an electoral pact. The Social Democrats lost power in Sept 2006 after 12 years in office in a loose coalition with the Green Party and the Left Party.

Now however Eriksson said the Left Party is 'backward-looking and old-fashioned'.

Eriksson said the current leader of the Left Party, Lars Ohly insisted on calling himself a 'communist' long after the party had officially dropped the label from its title and distanced itself from its Soviet supporting communist past.

'And I was genuinely shocked when I heard that he cried when the Berlin Wall came down. On such a joyous day for Europe. There's something a bit strange about that,' Ericsson told Svenska Dagbladet.

Eriksson said a future 'Red-Green electoral alliance should involve the Greens and Social Democrats alone.

'I meet a lot of people around the country, and many of them view a partnership between the Social Democrats and the Green party as the most exciting and interesting alternative,' he said.
