Dear Friends,
Now is the time to call Rep. Lloyd Doggett to urge him to oppose the
U.S.-Peru
Free Trade Agreement. The vote on the House floor is expected at the
beginning of October, but the House Ways and Means Committee might
have their
initial vote as early as this coming Tuesday, September 25th. Since
Lloyd
Doggett is on the Ways and Means Committee, we have until perhaps
Tuesday to
ensure that he votes against it. SO CALL DOGGETT TODAY!! Call his D.C.
office number 202-225-4865 -- or if you can't call long distance,
you can call
his district number 512-916-5921.
Why Should Doggett Oppose the Peru FTA?
Recent changes to provide enforceable labor standards do not go
nearly far
enough to ensure that working conditions will actually improve for
Peruvian
workers -- the two major Peruvian labor unions have recently
reiterated their
opposition to the Peru FTA
Other major NAFTA/CAFTA model problems remain in the Peru FTA,
including
prohibitions against procurement laws that support jobs and workers
rights,
the ability of foreign investors to sue to overturn environmental
and safety
regulations, and agricultural provisions that benefit big
agribusiness while
destroying the livelihoods of millions of small farmers.
Congress should not be handing the Bush administration a trade
victory. A
Democratic Congress should be fixing the existing bad trade deals,
not passing
new ones.
